Jervaux

Located in a bowl in the mountains on the historic Bainskloof pass between Wellington and Worcester, Jervaux is the quintessence of Old Cape charm and tranquillity. Surrounded by pristine Fynbos, with wrap-around views and over 400 meters of unspoiled river, including a large natural swimming pool, the Cape Dutch Cottage is the perfect place to relax and enjoy life's simple pleasures.

The Cape Dutch Cottage has one double bedroom en-suite, and is built in old Cape style with antique furniture. As it is on the far side of the river, access is via boat and a short walk. It has stunning views up the Kloof, and across the Breede river valley wine-lands to Mostert's twin peaks. The cottage has Eskom electricity and water is sourced from a natural rock spring on the property.

The property is well situated for a variety of activities, including wine tasting, both in the Breede River valley and over the pass in the Wellington and Paarl area, the property borders the Limietberg nature reserve on one side and vineyards on the other, from the rustic Calabash bush pub up the road to more upmarket options at some of the neighbouring wine estates, or just enjoying the peace and tranquility of the Cape mountains. There is a large pool in the river for swimming and the water is crystal clear, the entire Kloof upstream is protected reserve. In winter, the surrounding peaks are often snow-covered.

Upstream the Wit Rivier flows through the Limietberg Nature Reserve and is unspoiled. Firewood is usually available on site and is free.

"We had a wonderful time away from our busy lifestyles and could really relax in nature. If you don't need any luxuries in order to have a good time this is the place to go. Our dog had her best time of her life running around and swimming in the river.<div>Bring a sleeping bag along and maybe a frying pan otherwise all essentials are on site.</div>"

  • "Long weekend at Jervaux"

    21 June 2015

"<p>My partner and I had the loveliest stay at Jervaux. We weren't sure what we needed to bring - so we packed a lot of crockery, bedding, etc that we didn't really need. Although I do love my own pillow and feather duvet - which we did end up using. We also used our own coffee plunger and non-stick frying pan. Otherwise everything else you need is provided - including matches, toilet paper and towels even. There is electricity now (Eskom dependent). But the stove and shower works off gas. The shower isn't super hot - but warm enough.<br></br></p><p>The cottage has a lovely homely feel and is perfect for a restful getaway. The bed is super comfortable! Lovely couch in front of the fire. And gorgeous veranda to look out on the view.<br></br></p><p>Jo, the host, was so accommodating and helpful. We felt bad that he insisted on helping us cart all our gear across the river in the boat and carry it to our front door!<br></br></p><p>We had two gorgeous weather days - allowing us to explore the little river and surrounds, Then two rainy, windy days - perfect for gluwine and fire inside.<br></br><br></br>Ideal inter or summer getaway!<br></br></p><p>&nbsp;</p>"

"We had an absolutely wonderful stay over the weekend. If you enjoy rustic and remote, then this place is for you. If you don't over expect, then you will definitely not be disappointed. The cottage now does have electricity and a fridge so don't stress about the previous reviews about no fridge and/or ice.<div>The cottage is basic, but everything you need is there. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and left feeling completely unwound and relaxed.</div>"

  • "The Round House, Jervaux"

    03 May 2012

"A beautiful mountain setting. We stayed in the owners private house, which is still under completion,so there are areas of improvement which will hopefully be taken care of(e.g.the bathrooms)before letting out to visitors. A microwave would be nice,as well as more wine glasses, cutting board, dish cloths, braai utensils etc. We did not view the the other three cottages. A huge recent fire has left the whole area prone to ash, though it has opened up parts of overgrown bush;not enough access to the river pool near our house yet. Check if the woodcutting/clearing project is complete,to avoid nearby chainsaw noise! On the positive side, the stay was pleasant,we had electricity,it is reasonably well priced, and the bonus is that it is less than two hours from the hubbub of Cape Town central."

"Jervaux is a real adventure for the outdoor enthusiast but be warned that it is extremely basic with just the bare minimum of comfort. There will however be plenty of stories to share about your river crossings, candlelight dinners and of course your host Joe! He is such an interesting character who has so much enthusiasm and vigour that you can't help but like him. Our only real gripe was that the house was not very clean on our arrival and a little short on kitchen utensils. On the whole though, everybody enjoyed themselves immensely, including the three dogs!"

"Lovely cottage, but quirky. Access to the cottage very challenging in a leaking boat. It would be preferable to have a road to the cottage. Also no fridge, making self-catering tricky."

  • "Lovely"

    19 December 2011

"It was marvellous. The vies, the weather and the dogs loved it too. Take 'flip-flops' for walking on the river stones (even when swimming) and ensure that you have lots of ice and a big cooler box to keep things cold. The owner was an entertaining, fascinating man and this was a pristine nature setting. Will be back!"

"It was in the most beautiful setting and we loved our time there. Because I knew Joe from nearly 30 years ago when I worked with him as an intern, he gave us a substantial discount - this makes it harder to be critical now and also made the R225 per night more acceptable. Carting all our goods in a wheelbarrow on both sides of the river, no fridge, a very uncomfortable mattress and the fact that the house was not very clean all contributed to it being the sort of place that I would not pay R550 per night for. A pity because it could earn every cent of it with a few extra touches or perhaps draw more people at a lower price."
