Historic Pig and Whistle Inn

Located in the historic town of Bathurst, this 189-year-old pub, restaurant, and hotel is believed to be the oldest continuously operating pub in South Africa and is a Heritage site.

The Pig & Whistle Inn has 10 beautifully restored rooms and is a blend of historic ambiance and modern facilities. There are four en-suite rooms and six traditional, old-fashioned rooms with communal bathrooms.

Owned by Lucille and Gavin Came, the inn is renowned for its food and Old World charm. Generations of visitors, harking back to Lord Charles Somerset, can say "I've had a swig at the Pig".

"Fantastic luncheon, dinner and breakfast, although in my opinion, curry was too mild, but the average South African would ptobably say it was hot. The room was lovely. Bed comfortable as well as the accommodation. Shower was magnificent, such good hot water and fantastic water pressure. Better than my own home. Could gave stayed under that shower for the day. Worth every penny spent. Hotel full of old world antiques, that can be purchased as some items gave price tags on. Highly recommended and no TV, could enjoy the peace and read my book.I would however like hooks in the shared shower, as nowhere to place clothes, toiletry bag etc. Also a bar on the shower wall to hold onto whilst soaping to avoid slipping whilst soaping ones feet."

  • "Charming little gem"

    09 April 2017

"Although we only stayed one night, we had a lovely time. Pot pies at the restaurant are delicious and loved the historical furniture and feel to the place. One thing that does need changing though are those horrible small mugs in the bedroom -the type you find in hospitals- and the selection of tea and coffee is way too basic. Maybe small coffee plungers with sachets of filter coffee just to take it up a notch for the price? Bathroom was lovely-especially the bath- as was the bedroom with its massive 4 poster bed. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful in particular Nathalie and Max."

"it was interesting to stay with them. thanks that they waited up for us. the fact that we sheared a bathroom was a problem because the hot water was cold when we got here and it was not clean any more"

    24 August 2015

"Perfect little hotel for a one nighter and loads to do if you decide to stay longer. We arrived on a Monday night which is steak night. The butcher arrives sets up a table and a grid, you get to choose your cut and the grill it for you to perfection at a perfect price. The bar was buys and great fun, got to meet quiet a few of the locals."

  • "Recent stay"

    24 May 2014

"We had an en-suite room on the 1st floor. The room and bathroom were beautifully decorated and appointed. We ate in the restaurant and the food and service was great. Altogether a good experience which was made more valuable by the friendly folks in Bathurst who shared historical information. Definitely a place to stay."
