Bayside Beach House

Just one hour's drive from Cape Town, along the breathtaking R44, Bettys Bay lies nestled between soaring mountains and monumental surf. Bayside Beach House is set in the heart of Bettys Bay, at the foot of the Kogelberg Mountains, offering panoramic Indian Ocean views.

A blissful sleep in one of our comfortable units is the perfect start to days spent sand boarding down world-class dunes, hiking, and swimming along the Palmiet River in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, exploring the unique floral fynbos kingdom and natural waterfalls of the Harold Botanical Gardens, or visiting the local African penguin colony. End the day with a drink at the bar and a home-cooked meal whilst watching whales play as the sun sinks slowly into the ocean.

The guest house also boasts a swimming pool, free 9-hole mini golf course and pool table. An abundance of uncrowned surf breaks and many vast and unspoilt beaches makes Bettys Bay an essential stop along South Africas spectacular coastline.

  • "So close yet so far"

    20 December 2014

"We enjoyed our stay. No doubt. However, there were some minor details that annoyed/ aggrieved us. Since it's such an amazing spot, it must be a well-used hostel. The only problem is, that is shows. We felt like the potential monopoly this backpackers has, has led it into sloppy upkeep and maintenance.Upon arrival we were greeted in a very friendly manner and were happy to have arrived (all staff were friendly, approachable and forthcoming). A VERY short tour led us to our room, which was still being cleaned. We occupied our time giving ourselves a more comprehensive tour and unloading in the kitchen. The fridge was smelly and a mess, with ice dominating the freezer. No problems stuffing our goodies in though. The kitchen itself has all the necessary utensils, but could do with another chopping board or two as well as some nicer cutlery and knives. Lighting the gas stove/ oven with a lighter and not matches guarantees less hair on your hands, polished nails and an impromptu spa treatment. In the evening the hosts disappeared and before bed-time (since we were the last men standing) I had no clue if we were meant to lock up/ how we'd get in and out of the kitchen/ main house at night. There were many light fittings without working bulbs, and it was a fun game to try and find which switch turned on which lights (easily fixed with a small note above the switch). Downstairs is the bar and cancer room. The amount of smoking being conducted down there by the owners was very unpleasant and a game of pool is a short one unless you enjoy the reek of Marlboro throughout your cotton and epidermis. The owners also dominated the television. The putt-putt course is all concrete and in a sad state, but fun if you're up for a challenge. The greater garden could do with some loving. All-in-all these are small adjustments that could make it a 5-star spot. A lick of paint here and there and some attention to the small details would make it a killer. We stayed over during the weekend and were surprised to find no offerings of a bar-evening/ hostel events on offer."

  • "This is not a guest house"

    06 January 2014

"It was SO bad to stay here. People were already drunk early the afternoon and the kitchen was so dirty. People party until 3h00 the morning - we could not sleep at all. I will NEVER recommend this place or stay here again."

  • "Our experience"

"The place has more of a backpackers feel to it than a guest house. The people are friendly. We enjoyed our stay."

"The webpage is misleading. Only one microwave oven is unheard of and on-top of it all the microwave was out of order. The kitchen is way too small. Where was the DStv decoder?"

"I enjoyed the value for money, and Bea is a superb host. Pity about the inconsiderate, noisy 'inmates'!"

"I requested quotes for accommodation from different places and I was really late with it. Bayside responded very quickly; to me this is very good service. Bee and Nico were very friendly, we really felt at ease and welcome. Very friendly and relaxing atmosphere. The rates are also very affordable and value for money."

  • "Fantastic weekend away"

    24 March 2010

"Really enjoyed Bayside Backpackers. Unfortunately we booked two rooms instead of 2 people sharing so had to pay double! Ouch! Overall a wonderful stay with a room overlooking the sea-ahh... Friendly laid-back vibe. For restaurant recommendations go to the (something) whaler in Betty's Bay next to the superette-good quality food made by a french-trained chef in good old Cape Town :)"

"We went to Bayside Backpackers for a weekend away (we are from Cape Town). We were a group of friends and had a really good time at the Backpackers, which had a great bar area and Lewis was very accommodating!Betty's Bay is a beautiful area, with a gorgeous beach and the Palmiet River just 5 minutes away - would definitely go back again. We camped which was great, there is a small area and luckily we were the only ones in it.Our three friends were in a dorm, which was pretty small but did the trick."
