Travellers Rest

Traveller's Rest Farm is 34 km from Clanwilliam on the Wupperthal road, over the spectacular Pakhuis Pass, in an area with ruggedly beautiful landscapes and fascinating rock formations.
Discover a place where you can truly enjoy the wide open spaces, the varied plant and animal life, inspiring night skies, and so much more.

The cottages are all delightful in their earthy simplicity and surprising in their homely, well equipped comfort. Some are renovated labourers cottages and others are newly built in the same earthy style with local stone. Interiors are eclectic and colourful with natural reed ceilings, homely furniture and huge fireplaces for cold winter evenings. All the kitchens are equipped with cutlery and crockery, fridges, stoves and microwaves. Bed linen and towels are provided and an outdoor braai area completes the picture, for which firewood can be bought on the farm. A shared swimming pool near the river and restaurant brings relief after a hot day spent exploring the farm's hiking, mountain biking or 4x4 trails.

"This was a wonderful place to stay for the weekend. I loved the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere only 3 hours from Cape Town.We did the rock art hike and that was very cool. Will recommend this establishment to my friends for sure for anyone wanting a nice getaway"

"Beautiful view from our doorstep. Quiet and hot for 3 days! Wonderful to get back to nature and watch how the shadows change over the vast open spaces. Hiking trail to the Bushman sites was also great. People are friendly and the Restaurant had great food."

  • "Solitude in the Cederberg"

"We have always loved Travellers Rest. The cottages are solidly built, and each one has a charm of its own. They are unpretentious yet very comfortable, clean, and well equipped for a self-catering stay. The star ratings we give it are based on its isolation far away from the "Madding Crowd" in stunning mountain scenery. IN other words, we go there to get away from frenetic city life."

"Rustic. What you see is what you get"

"A bit rustic and far off the beaten track. On the other hand quiet and restful with staff ready to sort out problems."

  • "nice stay"

    08 December 2016

"We had a very nice stay at Travellers Rest. The cottages are in a nice and very quiet location, just what we were looking for. We had lots of space and enjoyed an early morning walk to the bushman paintings.<br/>Some of the furniture looked a bit tired and worn and could probably do with a bit of upgrading.<br/>All in all a place we would recommend."

  • "Ou plekkie kort aandag maar baie mooi gelee!"

    06 September 2015

"Ons het baie lekker gebly hier. Dit is gele in 'n pragtige kloof - weg van enige paaie en so stil en rustig. Net jammer dat die badkamers nie baie skoon was nie. Die meubels en beddens is oud maar pas in by die ou atmosfeer. Die handoeke was al bietjie opgebruik! Met nuwe handoeke, 'n verfkwas hier en daar en goeie skoonmaak sal dit 'n juweel wees!!<div>Kobus en vriende van Stellenbosch</div>"

  • "Quiet in beautiful surroundings"

    04 September 2015

"We stayed in a comfortable 2 bedroom unit which featured a fire place in the lounge. The kitchenette is fully-equipped and the beds are comfortable. Benefits include:<div>- a beautiful setting with places to go for walks or a view to sit and look at while you sit on the stoep and chill,</div><div>- it is quiet and the units are nicely spread out for peace and privacy.</div><div>- There is a restaurant and farm stall just up the road on the same property so you don't have to self-cater unless you want to.</div><div>A word of advice if you are using a GPS to find the place: my GPS took me to the farm house which is not where the cottages are. Reception/check-in is at the Farm Stall &amp; Restaurant which is on the other site of the road a couple of hundred metres towards Clanwilliam.</div><div>Very hospitable people, and I thought reasonable price for two people: I will stay there again any time.</div>"

"Excellent cottage and the rock art trail was super!"

  • "Zero rating"

    01 September 2013

"1. The rate per night is not the same as the quoted one.Paid the rate anyway.2. Check-in time is 13h00. We checked-in at 14h50. The rooms were not made up.Cottages were a mess.3. back to the farmstall. Complained- and was asked why I could not understand why the rooms were not made up?? Excuse only 4 cleaners for 25 cottages. My Fault!4. We advised that it was unacceptable, and were told we had the best cottages. Sadly the one we could open was in serious need of a paint on the inside.5. Asked for our money back, was given it without any problem. No offer of making up the rooms while we waited or sorting the problem out.6. However when we asked for the deposit back this was refused. We advised that we had kept our end of the contract but they had failed us.It was obvious that Charitie did not want a scene and was only too pleased to get us out the crowded farm stall.A great disappointment when you have driven most of the day to reach your destination."

  • "Lovely cottage"

    20 February 2013

"Very friendly and helpfull people at the reception of the Farmstall of Travellers Rest. We stayed at Kloof cottage. Very neat and all the comfort was there. Highly recommended. Pity we could not do the rock-art trail the next day.(stayed only for 1 night)"

  • "The cottage was very rustic"

    23 March 2010

"- but comfortable and clean. The surroundings are beautiful, you really feel very far away from the rest of the world. We went on the Sevilla Rock Art trail which was fascinating, and afterwards we spent the afternoon cooling off in rock pools, which was extremely peaceful."

  • "Wonderful surprise"

    11 January 2010

"The accommodation was beyond our expectations. The whole family enjoyed the experience in the tranquil setting, especially the swim in the river. My only negative comment is that the name of the place is wrong: it creates the perception that it is only suitable for a passover on your way somewhere, but the place is worth a visit as a destination in its own right. We surely did not want to leave the next morning."
