Die Gat Guesthouse

Situated in the valley of Middelplaas near De Rust, Die Gat Guest House is a farmstead and historic monument owned by the Schoeman family since the early 1800s. Characteristics of the old homestead, such as the paint of German origin on the interior walls of the voorkamer (lounge), the original architectural form of the house and the picturesque environment have ensured that many a South African film has been shot here.

The guest rooms in the outbuildings, previously the school where the Schoeman children were educated, the cart-shed turned winepress, or even an ox wagon used by earlier generations, have been suitably furnished to give you a unique experience of the outdoors.

A visit to the farm and the daily routine, where you get to know the ostrich with its fatal kick, and a visit to the labourers and their families ensure that you get to know the people and life on a typical Klein Karoo farm. The tranquility and peacefulness of Die Gat ensures an unforgettable sleep. You can even sleep with doors wide open so as not to miss the grumbling of ostriches. You can also relax at the special pool of Die Gat, with its beautiful view of the majestic surroundings.

  • "Superb Gem just outside De Rust"

    24 September 2015

"Because it was not full, we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. We were absolutely fascinated by the beautiful way in which the bedoom, bathroom and jacuzzi rooms have been done. Wherever we looked there was something of interest. The pictures, the decor in general reflected the history of this farm.<div>Sitting on the peaceful stoep which overlooks a field with sheep and horses was an added bonus.</div><div>Dinner was an experience. Susan, who told us that she has never been trained professionally produced a three course meal that was OUTSTANDING. Beautifully presented, very tasty. Anton was extremely attentive at our meal, and was a very charming dinner host.</div><div>Breakfast carried on where dinner left off. A faultless two course meal which was a wonderful start to the day.</div><div>All of this set in a beautiful garden with water fountains created from all sorts of farm implements, beautiful trees and flowers.</div><div>I could go on and on, but having stayed in many, many B &amp; B's around the country over the past years (albeit we were in the honeymoon suite) this has to be very near to the top of our list, if not comfortably at the top. A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.</div>"

  • "What a wonderful experience!"

"A pity we could stay only one evening! The initial feeling on arriving at Die Gat was one of "just another guest house on a farm." However, meeting Susan changed everything. Someone really passionate about her trade, making people feel that they are at home! Our room, a converted wine shed, was clean, comfortable and just what we needed. If you visit you have to experience dinner! Wonderful boerekos! And Anton was the perfect host! Please be careful as he is very persuasive when it comes to the after dinner drinks which can include anything from mampoer, Calitzdorp port and other potent concoctions! Breakfast enough and very tasteful! It can only be that as Susan gets up at 4 to prepare. Die Gat well worth the visit! Thanks Anton and Susan!"

"Die Gat was n wonderlike plek. Die Laatmiddag "sunset drive" op na die berg, die kuier om die eet tafel daarna, die smaaklike kos.....!!! As jy wil weet hoe 'n Gaste huis/ gaste plaas moet werk, kom leer by die mense. Ons sien julle gou weer. Die Gat was a wonderful place. From the drives to the food!!! If you want to know how a guest house should work, ask these people. We'll see you again soon."

"Staying in a national monument that has been in the family for 200 years gives a historical feel, and the setting is beautiful with lovely rural walks. Dinner and breakfast were superb, and Susan and Anton were hospitable hosts. Dinner is a must in order to avoid driving along the gravel road in the dark."
