    28 November 2016

"My husband and I had a superb weekend at Penny Farthing Country house. Foy is the best host, serving amazing dishes and telling unforgettable tales of the battles. We highly recommend this incredible experience for all interested in the battlefields, good food, excellent accommodation and a host that has a wide knowledge of the history and people of the area."

  • "Home from home"

"Treated like Royalty as the only guest. Food was great. Highly recommended overnight stay (or more). Mr Vermaak went way beyond normal hosting duties as a result of vehicle troubles."

  • "Wonderful welcome"

    21 November 2013

"Of all the excellent accommodations we experienced during our visit to ZA this was tops. Foy and Ann made us strangers so welcome. It was so nice to share the meal table and family talk. Especially entertaining was the history lessons from Foy. It made our battlefield visits much more interesting. And we did, very much, appreciate Ann's kind attention."

  • "Warm reception with all home comforts"

    13 August 2012

"I had been told I would receive a very friendly reception at this place, and I was not disappointed. I was the only paying guest at a large dinner party of the host's friends, but was welcomed into it as if I was one of the family. The host, Foy, was full of fascinating conversation about his family and South African history in general."

"We had a wonderful stay at the Penny Farthing guest house, rooms are lovely and the food excellent. It is a very friendly and welcoming place. Foy the owner does the battlefields tour which we did and strongly recommend this to anyone who stays there as without his great knowledge we would have not had a clue.Ann the housekeeper who does all the cooking is lovely and really friendly and makes everyone feel so welcome straight away. Everyone sits around a large dining table for breakfast and dinner, and what a great way to get to know people and to hear their experiences.Would definitely recommend the Penny farthing"

  • "Interesting accommodation with a great atmosphere"

    20 August 2005

"When you reach Penny Farthing you immediately notice the beautifully kept garden, bursting with flowers, which was an excellent introduction. We didn't stay in the main house, but in a converted fort dating from the time of the Zulu wars. It was comfortably furnished, contained all required amenities (shower, toilet, etc.) and had great character. The home cooked food was delicious and the meals around the long table in the grand dining room were highly anticipated and looked-forward to by all.Our hosts were, as written in the description, knowledgeable and friendly and made us very welcome, answering any questions about the area and its history with ease.Overall our experience was brilliant and one which we shall never forget!"
