Bear Trap Lodge

Bear Trap Lodge is situated in the town of Grabouw in the heart of the Elgin Valley. The Elgin Valley overlooks the Groenland Nature Reserve and is surrounded by magnificent mountains and natural splendour. Bear Trap Lodge is the ideal base camp for mountain biking, hiking and rowing enthusiasts or for anyone who wishes to explore the area. The Bear Trap Lodge has a homely feel with 4 comfortable rooms (2 twin & 2 triple), 3 bathrooms and a big kitchen that is fully equipped for self-catering. Come test your limits or just kick back by the fireplace and enjoy some Gluhwein.

We have also installed a wood-fired hot tub to warm up in during the chillier months or cool down in during summer.

All rooms have very comfortable mattresses and white bedding to sooth away the pain after an active day in the mountains.

The Elgin Valley is a mountain biking heaven; so whether youre a beginner wanting to meander around the countryside or an advanced mountain biker training for the Cape Epic, Grabouw has it all. Whatever your level of fitness, experience or adrenalin requirements, Grabouw is the ideal mountain-biking destination for you.

Elgin Valley also caters for hikers; from short strolls through the forestry plantations to multi-day hikes. For those seeking a bit more adventure there is the Suicide Gorge hiking trial situated in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.

Eikenhof Dam, situated at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club, boasts some of the best year-round rowing in the Western Cape. Surrounded by the high Hottentots Holland Mountain range, the dam is sheltered by the extreme winds.

Other activities in and around the area include wine & cider tasting, kloofing, kayaking, fishing, 4x4 trails, quad biking and great restaurants. Don't miss out on a chance to go on a Cape Canopy Tour!

  • "Great accommodation, pity about location"

    17 August 2015

"Really enjoyed our stay here, however we felt a bit misled by the location which is right in the centre of Grabouw. We were under the impression that we would be a bit more secluded and feel a bit more in nature considering the pics on the website. The house is really lovely though and good attention to detail. Would be nice to add some more things to the kitchen like some bigger bowls and pans."

  • "Great house, not so great location"

    17 August 2015

"The house itself is lovely and cozy and could comfortably accommodate the five of us cooking, relaxing and doing some yoga on the stoep. The kitchen is well equipped, and the beds are comfortable.<div><br /></div><div>However, I think it should be made clearer on the site that the house is situated on a very busy street, and not in a mountain setting as the image of the mountain biking seems to suggest. The idea we had was one of privacy, but the stoep of the house is visibile from the street, and on the second night the noise from the neighbours and road was very loud.</div>"
