Coombs Lodge
Situated just 20 minutes on the East London side of Grahamstown, half-way between Capetown and Durban, Coombs Lodge is a unique and special bush-camp that can accommodate up to four guests.
The main complex is a stone and thatch bush lodge, with two bedrooms set adjacent to the main Lounge and Living area, connected by thatched walk-ways. Nestled in amongst Eastern Cape valley-bushveld the Lodge teems with a variety of bird species and small game. The core living area has a comfortable lounge and dining-room, an open-plan kitchen, a sheltered braai area and a shaded deck looking onto the Lodge pool.
Accommodation comprises a twin and double room with en suite showers and toilets at the main Lodge.
The lodge is set on 80 ha and is stocked with small game. We are not a Big 5 type reserve with lions snapping at your heels, champagne game drives and the like - it's do-it-yourself territory. We are self-catering only, and guests are responsible for all their own cooking and entertainment around the pool and braai.
The Lodge is easily accessible to Grahamstown and its schools and University and it is an ideal venue for hosting small special functions and family gatherings.

02 April 2015"Wow. What an amazing hidden gem. Beautiful lodge, cottage and bush camp, buried in the bush, surprisingly close to Grahamstown. I will definitely be staying here again, next time as a holiday destination rather than simply a stopover. Wonderful warm welcome, everything you could possibly need, child friendly, reasonably priced - could not ask for more!"

We went for a walk and enjoyed the sight of the gnus, springboks, blesboks, etc. Perfectly quiet and pleasant.The house has everything you need, to cook, etc.We wished we could stay longer than one night. But, well, please keep the place in order to let other travellers enjoy it !"

05 February 2013"Fabulous weekend spent in the bush, the camp, kitchen, lapa, safari tents and bathroom are pristine and clean. Jeremy is a caring and courteous host who went out of his way to help us. I suggest more signage to find the tented camps, and making the steps down from the kitchen into the lapa a bit more pedestrian friendly, but otherwise, this was an awesome and highly recommendable place to stay."

12 April 2011"To have no cellphone reception or TVs blaring away was the best thing I experience for the past five years on holiday. I stayed in a tent which was wonderfully clean and well serviced. The drive to the main road each morning was like a mini game drive and what a way to start any day? The areas were well equipped and always clean. Highly recommended and I am sure to stay there again."

29 September 2010"Wow what a fantastic place, they have the most awesome safari tents with a deck overlooking the African bush each with a separate safari tent shower, straight out of a African Safari Guide book. A real budget bush experience that oozes class and luxury.We only booked one night as a stopover on our honeymoon to break up a long drive and were really impressed. To our surprise we had the lodge to ourselves as it was out of season and being unusually cold were kindly offered an upgrade to a nice warm chalet style room overlooking the pool deck. The communal facilities were five star with a bar kitchen and open-planed lounge. A note saying Fridge is stocked with beers and wine was found and I had a Windhoek beer which cost only R10!The owner was very friendly and we wish him luck with this fantastic venue and his future plans for it. If you are passing Grahamstown don't miss it."
