Mkomazana Mountain Cottages

Mkomazana is an historical site situated within a trans-frontier peace park; a unique property nestled at the foot of the Sani Pass in the beautiful Sani Valley. It is a nature lovers paradise and possibly the Southern Drakensbergs best-kept secret.

The accommodation is a charming combination of eclectic facilities consisting of two original and recently refurbished farmhouses and three picturesque new cottages with all home comforts. This former trading station from the 1800's era is perfectly situated for a range of outdoor activities including - high or low 'berg walking / backpacking / nature rambling / trout fishing (rates on request) / swimming in crystal clear mountain pools / mountain biking / bird watching. All of these activities can be undertaken from the property. You can also canoe or tube in the area ( 20km away) and play golf, squash or tennis (4ms away)

Whilst we wish to preserve the serenity of the area (and therefore do not allow motorbikes/quads to be ridden on the property), exhilarating fun for the adventurous can be had at the bottom of the driveway - test your 4x4 / mountain bike / motor bike skills on the famous and formidable Sani Pass which takes you up into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. At the top of the Pass is the legendary "Sani Top Chalet" which lays claim to "the highest pub in Africa".

NB: Bring your PASSPORT. If you do not have your own 4x4, tours up Sani Pass can be arranged (details on request). We have it all, flora; fauna (including otter, baboon, reedbuck, eland); wide variety of birds (including black eagle, bearded vulture & fish eagle); provenance of people past (history; bushman paintings) waterfalls, crystal clear 'berg rivers and pools; dams.

We guarantee you will not visit just once!

Please note - no Television or cell phone reception.

"Great place to stay in the Southern Berg, especially if you want to tick Sani Pass off the bucket list. We stayed in the cottage which was clean, spacious and comfortable with a nice log fire. Cooking facilities were good but a degree of organization was required regarding kitchen working surface.<div><br /></div><div>Staff were pleasant and efficient from the welcome to the departure.</div><div><br /></div><div>There was cell phone reception at Reception (where else) but it did not make or to our cottage. No TV either; heaven.<br /><br /><div>Walks in the estate were disappointing. The walk around the dam was too short. The mountain walk went through a lot of old gum plantation and I never made it to the top because of the thunderstorm. But then I guess there are a lot of walks in the Berg any way so it no great loss.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Would stay again.</div>"

  • "Nature at its most beautiful"

    28 December 2009

"It's all true: the bottle of wine, the scones, the friendly staff, etc., etcOn top of it you stay in THE most beautiful natural surroundings with an occasional and very modest sound bit produced by a passing car going up or coming down Sani Pass, just as a reminder you're still part of the 'civilised' world. The bird and insect life is amazing to observe and watching dragon flies preform their lovers dance is just an amazing experience. You have to be into this kind of thing of course because if you are looking for action of another kind I would suggest you stay in the city.if, on the other hand, you'd like to forget the concrete, fumes and hooting... Mkomazama is the place to stay for more than a day."

" It is a special place, worth the travel even if you don't go up the Sani. Friendly people managing the place who will go out of their away to assist, but without being in the way. Complimentary wine, roaring fireplace, early morning scones, great views, accommodation is tastefully furnished; bordering on luxurious. Everything pitched just right."

  • "Back in the 1900's"

    04 January 2009

"The trip towards Mkomazana Mountain Cottages was already noteworthy, we experienced sun, mist and rain. From Joburg it is quite a ride but all very worth it. We were welcomed at 19h00 with a bottle of rose and some fire wood. The next morning the sun was out and we went for a stroll to discover the setting. It is an absolute beautiful place, loved the dam with its natural pool (which we used on occasion) and the walk to salt and pepper a nice challenge. We loved the warm scones in the morning and a nice surprise that the ladies come and clean your cottage everyday. This was definately a trip worth making, it made us relax instantly."
