Calao Tented Camp

Situated on a 27 hectare property bordering one of the few perennial rivers in the area, Calao Tented Camp is an enjoyable and affordable stopover. The camp offers various types of accommodation on a self-catering basis, but breakfast and dinner can also easily be arranged on request.

The camp consists of two luxury tents, each with an en-suite bathroom, verandah, gazebo, and braai area. There are also three safari tents with outdoor bathroom, verandah, gazebo, and braai area. Another small tent is provided for children or a third guest. There are lights in all the tents that work with batteries and we can charge your camera or cellphone batteries for you.

Calao Tented Camp is perfectly located ten minutes from the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, 40 minutes from the Kruger National Park's Orpen Gate, and 45 minutes from Swadini in the Drakensberg. There is easy access from the R40 but the last kilometer on the property is a dirt road and can sometimes be a difficult drive.

  • "Not a pleasant experience"

    06 May 2015

"<div>The only complain I have about the place is the people running the place didn't tell us the place is not for kids. We went there with 3 children and one infant. It is a dangerous place for them considering the warning of poisonous snakes and scorpions and occasional hyena and leopard visits. I am still disappointed that the owners didn't mention it when we booked the place. They also didn't mention about solar power and absence of electricity. It was a mission to charge cellphones. Overall a bad experience. It might a good for some people, but don't go there with young children.</div>"

  • "Amazing/fantastiskt!"

    07 March 2013

"This tented camp was absolutely amazing! We really enjoyed our stay here. This is a very good way to feel the nature, the sounds and the life here. The couple that owns this place were very nice and told us a lot about the nature and the place. We recommend it strongly. Detta var en av de bästa upplevelserna någonsin!!!! Det franska paret som äger stället var oerhört välkomnande. Fräscht och rent i tältet, väldigt mycket "mitt i naturen" vilket var fantastiskt. Rekommenderas verkligen!"

  • "Ok"

    12 July 2012

"The camp was not well thought out but was charming in many ways. The washing up sink did not have a plug that fitted and anyway there was not hot water to that sink. It was winter and therefore dark early and there was minimal lighting in the cooking, eating area so cooking extremely awkward in the dark, probably not safe. The gas ran out and and only one burner on the stove worked. To be fair the owners responded rapidly and were charming but 1200 is a lot for a camp that needed a bit more attention to detail."

    susan britton, South Africa
  • "Paradise"

    29 May 2012

"We have just spent the weekend at Calao, it was outstanding. Every little detail was attended to and everything we required was there. The location is central to everything and 30 mins drive from Orpen Gate. The camp is so peaceful and quiet and one could hear a variety of night time sounds from the nearby game farms. It was a wonderful way to recharge the batteries and I highly recommend it."

    Liz De Vincentiis, South Africa

  • "Excellent accommodation - a real in-the-bush experience"

    26 February 2011

"Calao Tented Camp provided us with a very comfortable introduction to life 'in the bush'. The tents were clean and secure. The kitchen was well-equipped and the bathroom provided a unique experience of showering in the open air. Everything was clean and to a high standard and was overall very relaxing. The lack of electricity was not a problem at all. Jean-Marc and Martina were excellent and welcoming hosts. They even 'provided' us with little Sahara, the dog who would accompany me out to the car at night. This accommodation is perfect if you are looking for rustic self-catering accommodation that is comfortable and affordable. We had a great time and would recommend this place to anyone who loves doing outdoorsy things. It was a very convenient base for us for 5 days - scenic and not too long drives to Blyde River Canyon and Orpen gate, to name just two."
