  • "Beautiful cottage"

    02 September 2019

"The place was amazing, loved every minute of being there and was so sad to leave. The only thing i can recommend is to have a few more carpets inside as it was extremely cold when arriving there. Not knowing the weather it would have been nice if a gesture was made to have fire started inside to warm the cottage before our arrival as we were freezing. LOL. However our experience was fantastic and we cant wait to come again."

"We loved the cottage, it is cosy, but with a feeling of space. It also has character! It is situated in a beautiful setting with an incredible view not far away at the edge of the property. The only complaint I have is the stove and microwave are a little high for short people., but I will still love to come again!"

  • "Very cozy cottage!"

    08 December 2018

"Everything was great. Just the process of collecting/ dropping keys can be improved (struggled to get hold of caretakers upon arrival and departure)."

"Unfortunately my stay at Lothlorien Cottage was not that good. 1. There was a mess up with where and how we could get the key as we were on a touring holiday and did not receive the email from the owner. 2. I had a nasty experience with a Vervet Monkey upon arrival. It entered the cottage from the top window which was left open by the caretaker. It was sitting on the top railing and urinated on me. That freaked me out completely as I have been attacked and seriously injured by a Vervet Monkey in 2012.3. The bedding was not clean - we felt as if someone slept in it before us.4. The total cottage are in bad state of repair. The roof seems to leak as some of the furniture felt wet. 5. There fell worm like things from the roof onto the working area in the kitchen.6. The bathroom was full of nasty spiders and the shower missed some tiles.7. Some of the tiles on the kitchen's working area are broken.8. The place is very dark and smells musty and to worsen it all, from the 8 lights in the living area, 4 were out.9. We wanted to have a braai, but the braai area is so dilapidated and filthy that we opted not to use it at all.10. Upon arrival your first impression is a rusted overfull dustbin with some rubbish lying around it and you have to cross a huge pool of mud to get to the cottage. If needed I will supply you with photos of all of the above."

  • "Walks around the property"

    25 March 2018

"More carpets should be put down as the floors are really cold. Also the bedding needs to be washed on a regular basis as do the floors. The floors were filthy dirty. Cutlery and crockery also needs to get washed on a regular basis, lots of stuff was full of cob webs and dusty."

  • "The trailrun"

    10 December 2017

"There were only 5 towels, instead of 6. There was only one plug in the kitchen for two sinks. The caretakers servive was very good. The cutlery can improve. I missed a salad bowl, a wooden spoon and better glasses. The thatch roof gave the kids that slept upstairs a bad allergic reaction. We wanted to sit outside, but the table at the braai area is very run down and needs atttention. There was only three beach chairs to sit on outside."

"A lovely secluded cottage with all the amenities you need for self catering purposes. Well maintained and clean. Close enough to Hogsback main street and a perfect base from which to explore the area with all its waterfalls and hiking trails. Will definitely make use of this venue again."

    29 August 2016

"The cottage is lovely, very well equipped and clean. The setting is very tranquil, relaxing and quiet. Also spacious enough for our party of 4 adults and 2 children.<br/>My only negative is that it was difficult to contact the care taker for collection and return of the keys as her phone was on voice mail on a number of calls made."

  • "Some good points and bad points."

    29 January 2016

"This cottage is on a stunning property and it is very spacious and private.<div>However, there are issues with the electricity so it would've been nice to have a gas stove to cook on. A lot of the crockery is dirty and there are fish moths living in them, had to rewash a lot of things. Be careful of the bathroom taps as they also like to shock you sometimes. It is also very dark inside and when the power was out it was pitch black even during the day.<div><div>Despite the things mentioned above, it has a lot of character and I would've liked to stay longer. Nice braai area and garden, as well as comfy beds. It is quite cosy inside, we were happy with most of our stay.</div></div></div>"

  • "Detailed instructions not working."

    14 September 2015

"The Directions and Check in instructions was 12 pages. The person let us wait for the keys althou we followed the instructions. The said the rain was the problem. She should get a umbrella. The cottage was nice but cold. Coffee, Tea and Soap would have been nice as well as a bundle of wood."

  • "Comfortable among the forest."

    22 April 2014

"We stayed in Lothlorien for 6 nights in April, and what a great experience. The cottage is very spacious for 4 adults, is reasonably equipped and very cosy. We really enjoyed our stay, we were even sad to leave the cottage. I would definitely stay in Lothlorien again in the future. We all fell in love with Hogsback!"

  • "Midweek trip"

    16 November 2013

"Very quiet and private. Lovely garden. But the cottage is a bit rundown and needs some upgrading. Kitchen equipment is poor, toaster doesn't work etc. A bit more comfort would do."

  • "Lothlorien review."

    18 August 2013

"We make use of a lot of self catering establishments and never in my life have I ever encountered a reception as rude as the one we received when we went to check in. We were not even greeted properly. The cottage itself are very nice and have more than enough space. Though there are more rules allocated to the cottage than there are cutlery in the drawer. The night we stayed over was quite cold and we had to purchase our own wood to get the fire started. With the rates they charge they can at least add a free pack of wood to the mix. It seems that all the comments in the visitors book are just ignored or answered with a we do not supply this or that. Really guys would it kill you to supply a toaster? After so many previous occupants asked for one that is the least you could do. An additional note. Warn potential visitors that the roads are worse than driving on the back of a dragon, so they are prepared for it."

  • "Fantastic"

    22 April 2013

"We have stayed at Lothlorien a few times now and we enjoy it every time! It was a cold and wet weekend. We arrived at 5pm, phoned Michael and he delivered the wood within 10 minutes. We had hot water, and the new fridge and microwave were much appreciated. Thank you."

  • "Great place, very bad service!"

    04 March 2013

"We booked Lothlorien Cottage with 3 persons for 3 nights. In front off we didn't got a adress only a cell. number. We thought Hogsback is not that big and there probably will be a sign off the cottage. When we found a sign we searched on that road but couldn't find the cottage or another sign. We tried the cell. number of the owner but it was shut off. We found The Edge Mountain Retreat and asked if they know Lothlorien Cottage. In stead off information about the direction, we had to write down our names and cell. number and got the key. huh? When we arrived at the cottage there was no power we tried the cell. number of the owner several times but it was still turned off. We quickly started a fire and prepared a meal on the braai before it got dark. The next day the power was still off and the cell. phone of the owner still turned off. On the end of the day we finally reached the owner and he send a electrician. He found out that there was a power cut because of the boiler. When the boiler was turned off we had power again but still no warm water. The electrician warned the owner en we didn't hear anything from him. So the cottage and the area where lovely. But I hope for the next people on a holiday that they have more luck than 2 of 4 days without power and they can wash there own with warm water."

  • "Rules"

    08 January 2012

"Hogsback is absolutely beautiful and the cottage is comfortable, good value-for-money. The rules and regulations on the notice given to us when we fetched the key made me think of going back to school."
