Strandlopertjies Cottage

Strandlopertjies is a charming, picturesque stone cottage located on the riverfront at the mouth of the Breede River. The interior is cosy, modern and artistically furnished. The cottage has two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed, the second bedroom has two single beds/double bunk and then there is a second double bed in the lounge. Sleeps six in total.Please note that own linen and towels should be brought. There are duvet inners and pillows but own covers are needed.

The cottage also offers a fully equipped kitchen and a lovely outside barbecue area under the old Milkwood trees close to the water. There is a cosy stove fireplace inside to warm up the winter evenings. There is no television. Strandlopertjies Cottage is ideal for children as there is a shallow sandy beach right in front of the cottage which is very safe for swimming.

The area is also a paradise for fishing and fly-fishing enthusiasts and blood worm and pink prawns can be pumped right in front of the cottage. The surrounding area offers sailing and windsurfing, and is rated as one of the 10 best locations for kite surfing in the world. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, and of course, whale watching in the bay is one of the best whale watching spots in the country, and that the best months for that is during winter, June to October.

Please note that it is a one hour's gravel road from Swellendam to the cottage. Also there is only a farm shop where you can buy only the very basics, so food should rather be brought with. Braai wood can be bought at the farm shop. Own duvet covers, fitted sheets, pillow covers and towels should be brought along. We provide the duvet and pillow inners.

As there are no municipal services, guests are politely asked to take their own garbage to the dump about 2 km from the cottage.

"I've read certain reviews complaining about the lack of luxury at this cottage. That is not what this cottage is about. It is about being close to nature, peace and quiet, a short walk to the beach and river, fishing and the amazing bird life in the milk wood tree right in front of the cottage. Kobus and Stella are the most friendly and generous hosts. Kobus even showed us how to pump bloodworms for bait and advised us on the best spots for fishing. There is everything we needed in the cottage. If people are looking for luxury there is a pricey up market hotel across the river. We had a wonderful time and intend to go back."

"The cottage is attractively decorated and nicely situated on the banks of the Breede river. Unfortunately, our visit coincided with a large, extremely noisy group staying in the adjacent house which is 5 m away and has an entrance right next to the patio in front of the cottage. The reviews had mentioned peace and seclusion and that was our expectation. So I would recommend checking if the owners have a big group in the main house before booking. In addition, having to take own bedding and make beds when you get there is less than ideal if you're coming for a quick break. Otherwise the location is nice and the cottage is pleasant."

"We had a very nice weekend at Strandlopertjies this past weekend the 5th - 7th of June 2015. It was very cold though, but we made sure to pack in warm clothes and blankets. However, I do think there needs to be carpets put down on the floors in the lounge area and most definitely an in door fire place, because the cottage is stunning in winter and it is a lovely getaway location for a weekend. The view is great, we had a lovely walk on the side of the lagoon, beautiful sunsets and sitting by the fire at night was a treat!"
