Thonga Beach Lodge

Set on the pristine shores of the Maputaland coast, this luxury lodge is the ideal place to discover one of the last unspoiled and undeveloped wilderness beaches left on the African continent. Mabibi is a magical place of tranquil swimming bays and snorkeling reefs, coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches. Its crystal clear, warm waters offer unparalleled snorkeling and fantastic offshore scuba diving.

Nestled in a secluded bay, Mabibi, on the Maputaland coast. Thonga Beach Lodge is situated in the heart of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, an internationally recognized World Heritage Site. It is the first private concession to have been granted by the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Authority. 25 km North of Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The lodge can be reached by 2-wheel drive vehicle until the last one hour, where we have a collection point. Guests are then transferred in open 4x4 vehicles on the forested dune roads to the lodge. There are two collection times from the 2-wheel drive parking: 12h00 or 15h00.

The following activities are available at an additional charge. Please note they are dependent on weather and availability: Scuba Diving, Open Ocean Experience, Turtle Tracking. From November to March, Mabibi Sea Spa offers a wealth of seaweed treatments, facials and massages. Please do contact us for further details on packages.

  • "Outstanding!"

    27 January 2015

"One of the few places on earth that feels like it's bigger than humanity. A nature lover's paradise. Healthy food. The right level of attention by staff. We will be back."

  • "Totally amazing all round"

    08 December 2012

"As a family and as individuals we would like to thank all those who made our stay at Thonga without doubt the most amazing trip ever. The caring and "nothing too much trouble" attitude was wonderful and the activities, scuba diving and of course the turtles. The food and especially with a little 21month old and all attention to our every need without being intrusive made this definitely one of our most memorable trips. Thanks to all of you."

  • "Great experience"

  • "Valentines getaway"

    14 February 2012

"Thonga Beach Lodge is beautiful. We had the most wonderful stay here and came home feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. The staff were so friendly and the beaches really remote with beautiful dunes and forests to explore. We were blessed to see the turtles and hatchlings which made the trip even more special. Thanks to the Thonga team. We'll be back for sure!"

  • "First SA beach resort visit after touring East Coast"

    11 December 2011

"If you want to get away from it all, including cell phones and internet, and be in one of the most isolated 5 Star resorts in SA, then Thonga is the place to go. Understated rooms with views of the Indian Ocean, scuba dives launching from the best beach in the country and well-balanced three-course meals with a pretty decent wine list. The staff are ever happy to please. Let me not forget the experience of seeing a loggerhead turtle climb out of the sea, crawl up the beach, dig a hole and lay her eggs in full view of the assembled onlookers. Absolutely amazing. We will be back."

  • "Spectacular beach lodge"

    21 May 2007

"Thonga ranks high on my list for a spectacular beach lodge, situated in beautifully untouched surrounds. The staff were professional and attentive. Our personal requests were taken seriously and adhered to beyond expectations. Thank you for a wonderfully relaxing birthday weekend."
