Tucked away in the folds of the Sneeuberg mountains and close to the little hamlet of Nieu Bethesda, you will find Weltevreden, a historic Karoo sheep farm. Discover Africa's outback at Weltevreden where you can relax in the wide open Karoo countryside with its panoramic view of Compassberg and the Sneeuberg mountain range.
We offer you the chance to enjoy everyday sheep and cattle farming activities, walks, hikes, tennis on clay, a splash pool, sundowner jaunts by arrangement, and genuine peace and quiet under great night skies. Birds are abundant and offer good viewing, along with small game.
There are two self-catering cottages available; Cottage on the Pond and The Prison. We are located 56 km from the historic town of Graaff Reinet and 13 km from Nieu Bethesda, the site of Helen Martins' Owl House and inspiration for Athol Fugard's play "The Road to Mecca".
"Fantastic overnight stay with peace and quite of a Karoo farm. The house has ample space and a wonderful property with magnificent views. The owner was exceptionally accommodating to us. We received information on the town with restaurants as well as clear directions to the farm. Highly recommended!!"
"Cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. Jenny's directions were very helpful. The water from the geyser is a bit smelly - perhaps a warning note would be helpful."
"1) Security....sliding door leading to the braai area couldn't lock easily opened .2) No maintenance taking place around the house, one section sliding door glass broken.3) Pond overgrown and no swimming pool as advertised. We were very concerned about our own safety been a farm venue and close to road leading to house together with one sliding door that couldn't lock we were much concerned. We managed to find a screw among my tools which we used to secure the locking mechanism on door."
"fantastic overnight stay, whish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the peace and quite of a Karoo farm even more."
"Beautifull surroundings. Tranquil"
"This was our second time we stayed at Weltevreden and again we were not dissapointed. A short 14km drive outside of the town but yet close enough to have dinner in town! The road to the farm is well and can easily be reached with a normal sedan. We stayed at the pond house. Consisting of 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It is a self catering facility although we did not make use of the kitchen as we had dinner in town.It also have 2 braai facilities and is located amongst lovely big trees! The place is extremly clean amd we could not complain. Jenny made sure we were up to date on the arrangements!Again I will recommend this place to anyone!"
"Peace and quiet! No social media! Loved it!"
"We always decide to stay at a different town on our way to the West Coast. This time we selected Nieu-Bethesda and we selected the cottage on the pond at Weltevreden. Firstly based on reviews but also on what we required (three bedrooms).<br /><br />The cottage was very clean, although the furniture is old, the bed lined was very clean and crisp!<br /><br />The farm is situated about 13km from town, but you also need to be aware the road to Nieu-Bethesda is a 30km gravel road, which means the farm is 43km from the tar road.<br /><br />The kids loved the farm and played outside between the sheep!<br /><br />The town is absolutely stunning and full of history. Also some lovely restaurants are available (make sure you book!) Jenny provided some good advise on where to eat (you can also look on tripadvisor). We even had breakfast in town!<br /><br />We had a lovely stay Jenny, many thanks.<br />"
""BLISSFUL" is one way to describe our stay at Weltevreden. We stayed in the cottage on the pond and we were well looked after. It was peaceful and we loved our view of the Compassberg. For us, clean beds and comfy and new bedding is quite important and we got just that. Also, bathrooms were clean and neat. We LOVED the feel the antique furniture in the rooms lend to the house. Thanks for a lovely stay! Will visit again."
"The "jail" was cosy with everything you need. A shower and a bath! Bonus for me. I would like to visit in winter."
"Our booking changed from staying in The Prison to The Homestead - what a privilege to experience a typical Karoo farmhouse and the ambiance it provided. From the house cat that decided to make herself comfortable with the girls, to the farm children that came to play when we arrived. Glorious - we enjoyed each moment and will be back for more."
"We certainly will not stay over at Weltevreden again. We arrived in Nieu Bethesda at about 3pm and travelled along the road to Weltevreden following the instructions that we had been given to get to the farm.At a point along the road the road splits/forks and we were undecided as to which one we had to take as no mention was made in the instructions about the fork in the road. Having no cell phone reception in the area we chose one option and travelled along the road for about 10 minutes. We then decided that we must be on the wrong road, turned around and went to a farm that we had passed earlier and tried to get some sort of phone reception there. fortunately this worked and we were able to get hold of Jenny's daughter who advised us that we were indeed on the wrong road. eventually we got to the farm. There was no-one there so we sort of made ourselves at home after a very long ride from Queenstown. At bathtime we discovered that there was not a drop of water in the whole house. Once again with no cell phone reception my daughter and I decided that we would have to ride all the way back to Nieu Bethesda to find someone to help us. On the road back to Nieu Bethesda we fortunately managed to flag down a neighbour from the next farm. He very kindly offered to come back to the farm and see whether he could assist us. He found the farm workers and they tried to get the water pump working. At this time we were really fed up as it was freezing outside and we were outside with the neighbour and staff in the veld busy with the water pump. The pumps must have come on during the night...there was evidently a lot of air in the pumps because the noise coming out of them was quite disturbing...and then promptly proceeded to flood all the gardens around the cottage. The following morning we packed our things and left the farm which was quite disappointing as the setting is beautiful but the place does not have anyone living on the farm at the moment and there should be someone there to keep an eye on things. We were 3 women travelling alone and certainly did not get the impression that we would have to get water pumps going and things like that. Not up to standard... the toilet in one of the bedrooms does not flush and fill, the main bedroom smells of sewerage and there is serious work needed on the entire plumbing/sewrage system."
"Dit was baie lekker. Die gasvryheid uitstekend. Dit is n asemrowende plek. Die huis was silwer skoon. Sal beslis weer daar gaan bly. Jenny was baie behulpsaam. Dankie."
"From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, Judi showed us round the absolutely acceptable two bedroomed cottage and we were instantly at home. A great location which we look forward to visiting in the future."
"Very nice only used it as a stop over. But the people were very friendly. They supplied us with food and drink for a braai at very good prices. I would definitely like to go again but for longer."
"The access roads are not good but we enjoyed the scenery and the peacefulness. Rooms are comfortable and are adequate for an overnight stay."
"The dirt road is not to bad. The setting perfect with a snowcoverd Compass berg in the distance could not ask for more. The cottage is really nice with one of the widest beds I have ever seen. My Greek guests were really impressed with everything and probably would be back next year.Highly recommended."
"Warm hospitality, generous accomodation, beautiful environment, great service - pity about distance and road conditions."
