The Lodge on the Beach

The Lodge on the Beach, is a guest house situated right on the beach and probably the closest you will get anywhere along the Wild Coast. There are three rooms at The Lodge on the Beach, all of which are sea facing overlooking the length of Second Beach, a rustic community consisting of three accommodation establishments, two quirky restaurants and a local shebeen.

All rooms, the large shaded veranda and the braai area have magnificent views of the ocean, lagoon and forest with 'The Gap and Blowhole' in the background and Bulolo River and Lagoon at your doorstep. Each room has a small sundeck and private bathroom which is not en-suite.

The Lodge on the Beach has a relaxed atmosphere and is most suitable for couples and small families who wish to be a stones throw away from the ocean and lagoon. It is also a good place to start the 'Port St Johns to Coffee Bay Hike' from, as we are right at the beginning of this hike.

The Lodge on the Beach is a bed and breakfast, and dinners can be provided on request. Local fishermen often provide seafood such as crayfish/lobster, fish, mussels and oysters which we prepare for guests. There is also a self-catering option where guests make use of the communal kitchen and braai area. There are also two restaurants namely the 'Delicious Monster' and 'Wood`n Spoon' which are within 50 meters of The Lodge on the Beach.

Once at The Lodge on the Beach there are many things to do without driving anywhere which include relaxing on the beach or in the lagoon, fishing, walking through Silaka Nature Reserve to Third Beach, walk to 'The Gap and Blowhole', hiking to Bulolo Waterfall, and paddling up the Bulolo River.

"It' such a chilled place and the hosts are more than welcoming. Will come back for sure!"

  • "The Lodge on the Beach"

"The setting is amazing. The accommodation is more like a backpackers than an actual lodge. The house needs a bid of renovation but it's clean and comfotable for a one night stay. The road to Port St Johns remains challenging and very slow with obstacles such as potholes, slow vehicles, taxies, pedestrians and live stock.<div><br /></div>"

  • "STOP!!! In heavens name don't Book this one!"

    28 June 2014

"Yes the view is amazing but these photo's have been carefully selected to deceive you.On arrival we were extremely uncomfortable with the area. Not shown on the pictures are the local taxi stop-and-drink-with-loud-music spot right across from the river, where you get stared out of your car as you pass by.Also, right where you turn off from the 'road' (for the lack of a better word) there's a shebigne /taxi rank that you have to drive through to get to the hovel on the beach, barely 100m down the road. The so-called restaurant next door is an old battered caravan and did not look very hygienic. Then when you get to the 'lodge'... Setting aside the extremely overgrown and unneat garden, the cleanliness of the house in general, that 'is it safe to touch that?' feeling you get when you walk in... Our main concern was safety and we decided to not stay the night. Fortunately we could find a very nice place next to the main river, before you get to these uncomfortable areas. And it was something that definitely did deserve the name lodge.Since we had paid the nights stay in full well in advance, and the cancellation policy was that deposit would be forfeited I requested to at least have the rest of the money paid back to us. We were told by the lady that there was no cash on the premices but that I should send a mail to her husband since he works with the finances. I never received a reply to my mail nor has my money been paid back. This is a backpackers inn AT THE MOST, and definitely NOT suitable to be marketed as a 'lodge'. Please change it to a backpackers inn, it's embarrassing to think that overseas tourists might think SA's lodges look like this. Unfortunately this rating does not allow for less than a 1-star rating..."

  • "nicht buchen!!!"

"translation Hello to all, the pictures look great, but just do not book this property. Absolute hovel in a very questionable area of Port St Johns. We (7 people) drove to visit despite deposit immediately and searched us a reasonable accommodation.Hallo an alle, die Bilder sehen toll aus, aber diese Unterkunft blo nicht buchen. Absolute Bruchbude in einer sehr fragwrdigen Gegend von Port St. Johns.Wir (7 Personen ) sind nach Besichtigung trotz Anzahlung sofort wieder weitergefahren und haben uns eine vernnftige Unterkunft gesucht."

  • "One regret"

    28 February 2014

"Our only regret was that we planned only one night at The Lodge! The location is stunning and the restaurant next door makes it very convenient as well. We were welcomed warmly and Kat was more than helpful. The room was comfortable and we enjoyed meeting the other guests in the public areas. I recommend that you arrive before dark if you are not familiar with the area because the last turn off can be tricky."

  • "Horrible"

    26 February 2014

"It was shocking!!! We were under the impression that we could do self-catering, but The fridge was full of the owners stuff. No place for our stuff. One small bar fridge for two separate rooms. We turned around and had to go and look for other accommodation. The view is beautiful from the Lodge, but you should take pictures of the lodge!!! not up to standard with your other places!!! Grass was long!!! Just horrible. The other booking I made through Safari was up to standard, but not this one!!! will never recommend it to someone. Even though we paid in full, we weren't prepared to stay there!!!!"

  • "Not at all what the pictures described"

    18 November 2013

"I have to honestly say that the area where the beach on the lodge is situated is appalling. It looks like a scrap yard. Its not my intention to bad mouth any establishment but this had to be the worst accommodation I have ever seen in my life. The House stank, the bathroom was dirty and the area is dodgy. We never even slept over because of the utter disgust we were experiencing. I was willing to give up my deposit and take the long drive back to Bloemfontein without any rest. I don't understand how any agent like safarinow could even recommend this place. I am appalled and highly disgusted."

  • "Good value for money"

    30 July 2013

"Basic but nice - good value for money... Fantastic views of the beach and nice bush walk close by."

  • "Amazing view"

    26 July 2013

"We stayed only one day (girl 6 years old and 2 adults). A very silent place on the end of the world. Beautiful view, very friendly staff. The rooms (specially the bathroom) had seen better days, but useful. The "restaurant" few footsteps away serves very good meals - check the very good steak! For that price, for a short stay this place is recommended."

  • "Amazing holiday destination"

    06 May 2013

"The Lodge on the Beach has the most incredible view of the ocean and one of the famous local attractions, the blow hole. The room was cosy and it was magical listening to the waves as we slept as we were literally 200 meters from the beach. The lodge is next door to one the finest restaurants in Port Saint John’s, the Delicious Monster. The restaurant overlooks the town and is a perfect spot for a romantic crayfish dinner under the stars."

  • "Preis Leistung o.K.- Nette Betreiber"

    07 February 2012

"Die Lodge hat eine Super Lage, alles war sehr sauber die Besitzer nett und freundlich, aber man darf nicht zuviel erwarten, über das Nivau einer Backpacker Ebene geht es leider nicht hinaus."

  • "Very relaxing with great hosts"

    28 November 2011

"We stayed for three nights in November with our nearly two-year old son and really enjoyed it. It is a very relaxing place and located so close to the beach and the river - one of the highlights of our holiday. Cat made a braai-dinner on two nights which is highly recommendable, otherwise there's the Delicious Monster next door which is just as nice. We would definitely stay here again."
