Bergrivier Chalets Eastern Cape

Experience a true eco-retreat where you can relax in one of the most tranquil settings nature has to offer. Bergrivier is situated in beautiful, peaceful surroundings at the beginning or end of the Baviaanskloof route.

We offer luxury accommodation in the rondavel, or a pioneer experience in an ox-wagon. Campers can pitch a tent at the beautiful campsite.

This is a paradise for birdwatchers. The beautiful Knysna Loerie is seen quite often. At night you will hear the Night Jar calling and so often do you see the Crown Eagle soaring over the hills. The call of the Fish Eagle is also occasionally heard.

Guests can enjoy a hike in the veld or kloof and, for the more adventurous, mountain biking can be arranged in the adjacent Longmore forest. This retreat is conveniently located in the scenic Eastern Cape, only 50 km west of Port Elizabeth, and close to the N2. The very popular beach resort, Jeffrey's Bay, is only 35 km away.

  • "Excellent"

    12 March 2016

"When we arrived at our destination, we were informed that the accommodation that was originally booked for were not available at the time of arrival so we we given another accomdation, and i must say that was the best move. It was so well situated for us, and to top it all of with the accomadation that were more expensive than the originally booked accom,we were not asked to pay in any extra money, i mean this place was like a fully equipt house, everything you need. its just that time flew so quick and it was difficult leaving it all behind. This place is probable fully booked during holiday season, in that i have no doubt. I love nature andthe quite atmosphere. That is the place to be"

  • "Peace and tranquility"

    23 February 2015

"We turned off the lights and sat in the dark gazing across the forest listening to the owls, nightjars, buck and little animals scuffling in the bush. Wonderful stars too.<div>The cottage had everything we needed and it was spotlessly clean. Japie's family have been on the farm for 160 years - no wonder they offer such old fashioned hospitality!</div>"

    03 February 2014

"I can highly recommend Bergrivier for hospitality, quality of lodgings and service. Being stuck due to a misunderstanding, Bergrivier immediately assisted and provided cold drink, a great dinner and breakfast. The scenery is amazing and hiking along the Bergrivier kloof and a hidden kloof was fantastic. I would highly recommend Bergrivier for nature and hiking lovers."

  • "A beautful escape!"

    05 February 2013

"We arrived at Bergrivier two days into our holiday and in much need of a the paradise that awaited. Bergrivier is tranquil, beautiful and has a simple air about it. We had the entire campsite to ourselves and we found ourselves relxing within nature almost instantly. Japie made us completely at home within their camp site - the bathrooms were clean, we had free firewood and the fire-wood powered geyser was set up for us on arrival. I couldn't have asked for more welcoming patrons and I could feel their love for their farm and the place where their family has stayed for so many generations. I really consider this a special place where I will definitely return to."

    26 April 2012

"It was such a peaceful, rustic campsite and we had a very friendly welcome. Both days we walked up the unspoiled side kloof where the vegetation was very lush with quite a number of birds, as well as an eagle's nest. Although the water was fresh we had a great swim in the pool in the river."

  • "Redpath visit December 2011"

The views are amazing and the waterfall a 'must' to visit. The log cabin is comfortable and the old ox wagons a real treat. The hosts are wonderful and be sure to talk to Oom Japie regarding the history of the farm. We thank Oom Japie and Tannie Dorie for a wonderful time. We will visit again."

  • "Amazing escape"

    09 January 2012

"An amazing escape just off the N2, in a beautiful part of the Eastern Cape. We were warmly welcomed and accommodated. It is ideal for nature lovers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I would have loved to stay longer and enjoy the waterfall, nature walk, and more. Amazing stargazing - a real highlight of our holiday! Frog calls galore! This is such a special place that every one needs to visit."

  • "Beautiful"

    30 August 2011

"A wonderful weekend camping getaway where "living off nature" is at its best! Our favourite was the old-school donkey (making a fire every morning for our hot shower) and the most beautiful walk up the river. We can't wait to do this again when we get back to see if our rock pile that we made is still standing. We will most definitely be back! Will just bring more drinking water next time! Overall the most wonderful weekend I have had in a long time! Thank you Oom Japie and Tannie Dorie."
