In the heart of the Free State, 35 kilomters south of Bloemfontein on the N1 lies a beautifully restored old farmhouse, De Oude Kraal Country Estate.
We offer you rest and tranquility after a long day's travel in luxury, romantic accommodation and spend a few days unwinding on the farm. Adorned with family heirlooms and collectables, the homestead offers old world charm, whilst Gerhard's exclusive bar and wine cellar provides a wide variety to satisfy all discerning guests.
Marie's renowned Free State cuisine offers a gourmet dinner by candlelight, a hearty farm breakfast and is a culinary feast in all aspects. A complimentary afternoon tea with cakes awaits you upon check-in. Lounge in the sun, read a book from our in-house library and experience the peaceful park-like gardens under the bluegum trees. Explore the farm by horseback, footpaths, sundown tractor ride or enjoy one of our many other outdoor activities. Meaning " I Dream" in Sotho, our 4 star garden rooms are all individually themed and decorated by Marie. Each boast a private patio, open fireplace, en-suite bathroom, heater, television and tea and coffee facilities. Some have under floor heating and spa bath as an added luxury.
After a leisurely meal snuggle up under fluffy goose down duvet and mohair blanket. For the romantically inclined there are a variety of choices , each unique with some welcome extras. De Oude Kraal is Gerhard and Marie's passion and that is truly reflected in their attention to detail, that ensures not just a stop over, but a wonderful part of your travels

16 December 2019"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the night spent at the Oude Kraal. The five-course dinner was exceptional and all the kitchen staff need to be congratulated on orchestrating a magnificent culinary experience. Our breakfast experience was also amazing. If for no other reason, I would return to Oude Kraal to experience the food on again! Our room was large and included our own lounge and verandah. The glass garden shower needs to be perked up to match the standards of the rest of our experience,"

05 January 2015"The location is excellent for an overnight stop for those traveling to or from JHB. Just far enough off the N1 to be peaceful yet convenient to travelers. In context to the room rate charged per night the farmhouse /gardens and estate are in need of some attention regarding general maintenance, having a somewhat disheveled appearance.However everything was clean.The food was really excellent and well priced, an unexpected dining experience in such a location. At a lower room rate, or if some cosmetic renovations and maintenance were done I would stay there again. ESTABLISHMENT'S RESPONSE: Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it. We just wish to reiterate that this is a historical building dating 1885 in the Old English style with renovations as a continuing process. Our gardens are extensive with maintenance on going. We completed the renovation of two of our rooms in 2014 with complete refurbishing. We have a high service standard. We do have lower rates out of season."
