Waterbessiebos Cottage

Waterbessiebos is a unique, architect-designed, modern timber frame self-catering cottage and is two metres above the ground and surrounded by indigenous bush. Rest assured; the cottage is securely fenced in.

It is equipped with a queen-size bed and a bunk bed, and can sleep three people. The cottage features an open-plan set-up, with a fully equipped kitchen, breakfast nook ample cupboards furnished in Matumi; Kiaat wood. Ideally situated as a honeymoon suite, a romantic or a weekend getaway, but also very centrally located to several interesting tourist spots around Tzaneen.

Offering beautiful views of the bush including Water Berry (Waterbessie, Syzygium Cordatum), Matumi (Mingerhout, Breonadia Salicina), Round-Leaved Teak (Dopperkiaat, Pterocarpus Rotundifolius) and other species and ferns. By just sitting on the deck, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the monkeys or see the occasional bushbuck grazing shyly in the bush. Sightings of smaller animals such as meerkat and guinea fowl are also possible, and at night bush babies, muskeljaatkat, porcupine and civets may make their appearances too. You can also watch several bird species from there. For the romantics, you can take a stroll around the magnificent garden and sit under the age-old Matumi trees next to the meandering stream. The splash pool is set among the trees with surrounding wooden decks and not only provides wonderful refreshing times, but also is a beautiful addition for a romantic sun-downer.

Pre-arranged home cooked meals can be ordered and taken on the deck, in the cottage or at the homestead.

"Een nag was genoeg want daar is regtig niks om te doen nie. Geen internet, jy is afgesluit van die wereld en dit doen couples goed om net weer met mekaar te kan praat!"

  • "Following the light through the trees"

    03 September 2014

"I could happily spend a week in this tree-house style cottage doing little other than watching the light move through the trees. This is a surprisingly comfortable spot from which to do so, with a spacious open-plan structure and unique architecture. The house on stilts is made up of interesting shapes, with a bow-like deck jutting out into the forest garden. Sitting at the pretty round table and chairs on the deck one may enjoy warm tea and buttery toast as you sink into a simpler way of being.Inside Waterbessiebos Cottage, there is no treehouse grunge here the fittings are modern, with a well designed kitchen. Zig-zag cupboard handles in brushed silver contrast with the rich grain of the wood. The floors have a laminate wood finish and the walls all end in glass skylights. An artistic eye has combined grey and red in the corner lounge which makes the most of the forest views with full height windows. In the en-suite bathroom there is a wide, deep stone bath, with matching basin and tiles. A pair of luscious, thick, soft grey gowns hang behind the door. Accommodation Experience:It is night and an owl hoots softly outside. It is hard not to feel blessed when an owl chooses your home for the evening, and it is especially hard not to feel blessed when you are retreating in such a calm and beautiful space as this. After the busy excitement and travel of the past few days, this place is like a coming home to myself in silence and solitude. There is a satisfying circularity to the idea of leaving home to come home to oneself, and this is the mystery offered by a particularly characterful stay like this treehouse.I feel a gentle unwinding and I look forward to a long nights sleep in the soft bed as much as I look forward to watching the morning light move through the trees."

  • "A moment of peace and belonging."

    21 July 2014

"Firstly the cottage is situated in the middle of the bush and that makes it a perfect place to relax and forget about the outside world. The fence that surrounded the yard makes it very safe. The host Myra will make you wish you had your boss, mom, driver etc with the love and care like her's. She checked on us all times and before we get there she called to see if we are getting the way correctly. It is indeed a perfect place for a romantic getaway. The garden is amazing and her dogs are just so welcoming and friendly too. Our 5 days stay (July 2014) was so amazing and peaceful. We shall definitely check in again."

  • "Anybody home?"

    27 December 2013

"Beautiful surroundings. Cozy cottage. Owners however weren't home. The cottage was not cleaned properly before we arrived. Through our 6 day stay the cleaners came once. Our linen was never changed and our towels replaced once which we had to ask for. The pool was dirty! We especially selected a place with a pool and we couldn't use it. There is only a small bar fridge which is definitely not appropriate for a 3 sleeper."
