Heron House, Venterstad

Heron House is situated in Venterstad and invites you to enjoy its typical Karoo ambience. With high ceilings, Oregon floors and spacious rooms, we offer comfortable and convenient accommodation in a relaxed atmosphere.

Unlike Oviston and Gariep Village, the temporary prefab asbestos houses that were put up in Venterstad during the construction of the dam and tunnel, have all been removed, so there is no danger of exposure to airborne asbestos.

The house has a lounge area with DStv easy view channels and a music system. Outside is a built-in braai and off street secure parking. Relax at Heron House around the braai while enjoying the sight of hundreds of kestrels migrating from Europe every year in summer. At night you will be treated to the open sky full of stars and the sounds of the country night-life. We welcome well-behaved pets in our fully enclosed garden by prior arrangement.

Please note that we need a minimum of 48 hours notice for all bookings.

Venterstad is more than just an overnight stop, it is a base from which to explore the little-known wonders of the Bo-Karoo. Visit the Oviston Nature Reserve and the Gariep Dam while taking a tour of the dam wall. Observe and enjoy a large variety of birds, go river rafting down the Orange River or horse-back riding along its banks. Steep yourself in history and visit the various Boer War sites, including a drive over historical bridges spanning the mighty Orange River.

  • "Heron House - casa fantstica!"

    06 April 2014

"We used Heron House as an overnight stop. The owner was an excellent host. The house was very neat and well equipped, including a fully fitted kitchen and the house even had an assortment of childrens videos as well as DSTV to keep the kids occupied. The bedding was crisp and the beds were also very comfortable with electrical blankets for the cold. We will definitely use Heron House again for our mid break between JHB and PE. Muito obrigada Senhor Bastos. Elizma Grobbelaar and kids"
