Blouberg is a 9300-hectare provincial government-owned nature reserve in the Limpopo Province. It offers guests the exciting opportunity to experience a rich diversity of plant and animal life in rustic accommodation along the mixed bushveld, woodland and riverine.
Accommodation on offer includes the Mashatu Camp which consists of four family cottages, the Tamboti Bush Camp with safari tents, Molope Campsites and the Modumele Wilderness Camp, a more rustic experience and not for the faint hearted.
Due to the presence of dangerous game, only guided hikes are permitted and self-drive game drives are possible, preferably using a vehicle with a high ground clearance. To access the southern region a 4x4 is required and vehicles may not be driven off existing roads. Travellers need to always be aware of their surroundings when disembarking from vehicles as a confrontation with a buffalo or a leopard is always a possibility.
Animals found on the reserve include Cape buffalo, giraffe, eland, sable, waterbuck, gemsbok, red hartebeest, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, impala, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer, steenbok, duiker, warthog and bushpig. Predators recorded are leopard, cheetah, caracal, brown and spotted hyena, and numerous small mammals like civet, red spotted genet and African wildcat.
The bird list stands at more than 230 species of which the flagship for the reserve is the Cape vulture. The breeding colony hosts more than 650 breeding pairs and forms a stronghold for this threatened species in southern Africa. Visitors can view these birds at close range, especially during winter months at the Vulture Restaurant when they come to bathe daily at the waterhole.
"The overall well maintained roads, hides and camp was most impressive. Very heart warming to see so many waterholes. Well marked roads were very helpful. The only little problem we encountered was the unmanned office to receive us and give us a map of the reserve."
"Blouberg is fantastic if your expectations are correct. It is small, has easily sighted giraffe, buck and buffalo. The birds are great, the bushveld is pretty pristine. The sight of the hundreds of vultures circling above the colony is unique. The accommodation is old style but great. You really should have a 4 x 4. if you don't you must book game drives otherwise you will be camp=bound in a sedan.<br/>****************************************************<br/>Hi Michael,<br/> <br/>Thanks for your positive review and glad you enjoyed Blouberg.<br/> <br/>You are right of course, a 4 x 4 is needed to make the most of Blouberg and a sedan will be camp-bound. However most roads can be driven in a bakkie or SUV without 4 x4.<br/>And the best options of all are the game drives and bush walks .<br/> <br/>We hope to host you again in the near future.<br/> <br/>Kind Regards,<br/>Rick<br/> <br/><br/>"
Baie goed. <br/><br/>Establishments response: <br/><br/>Hi Dirk,<br/> <br/>Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed Blouberg.<br/> <br/>We hope to host you again in the near future.<br/> <br/>Kind Regards,<br/>Rick<br/>"
"Accommodation was very basic. No service or friendly faces.Nobody took the time to tel us more of the the park, the animals, vulture colony."
"Stayed 2 night at Molope Camp and loved it! We were the only guest in the whole reserve and enjoyed the beautiful nature a lot! The camp site was big and at the wonderful place."
"The camp site was clean and well kept. Love the big trees and amount of shade. Bathrooms can get some work done, but all was functioning. We enjoyed driving around.Would visit again"
"It is a beautifull reserve with friendly staff. The chalet was very clean and well equiped.Roads are not to bad. 4x4 or high clearence is nessesary but not to bad. It is just a pity that some of the furniture is very warned down."
"I have been travelling to the Tuli area in Botswana for most of my life, yet this was my first stay at Blouberg. What a wonderful experience!! From the helpful and friendly service while booking, the clean beautifully rustic setting of the Tamboti camp, to watching the first breath-taking bush sunset. I wish I could have stayed longer to get a closer look at the vultures - but we did get to see them circling above us."
"We enjoy our stay again nothing to complainabout. With all the rain we have a few tick bitesbut that comes with the bush. We recommend that the road to the fountain be cut open a bit.We will go again to charge our batteries. THANKS FOR OUR BOOKINGS!"
"We enjoyed our time there. The fountain was so peaceful. We had our lunch under the beautiful large trees at the stream from the fountain. There was no noise just the water and birds. That was what we needed. Thank you!"
"Thank you for a wonderful stay. The hut was beautifully clean and neat. The drives were also really enjoyable. The service was friendly and helpful! We will be back and for a longer stay next time! Thank you!"
