Quaggasfontein Private Game Reserve

Quaggasfontein Private Game Reserve is a secluded jewel near the town of Colesberg. Here, in the vast and extensive Karoo, we have as our sole focus, to maintain the simplistic principles of life so tangibly found in our unique environment.

A calming existence can be experienced in the operational variety of businesses on Quaggasfontein. Unique riparian and semi-mountainous habitats, lend themselves to a balanced composition of species to be found on this 28 000ha reserve. Herds of both small and large herbivores can be encountered. From the timid Springbok that once owned the Karoo, to the burly Cape Buffalo. It will be easy to understand where our slogan was conceived Where Quality Roams!

This lodge has been restored with an emphasis on natural materials as far as possible. The lapa/barbecue area is some 10m from an oft-frequented water hole that is popular with all species. A stone wall surrounding the lodge enables close-up game viewing.

The Lodge comprises two sets of buildings. The first contains a massive bar/lounge/dining area, a double kitchen, and three staff suites. Adjacent to this complex is six en-suite (showers only) double bedrooms, one having a small private garden. All the rooms offer coffee-making facilities and are equipped with a fan, fridge, and minibar.

  • "Dissapointing"

    22 December 2017

"Great hospitality, no internet or cell signal in room, TV not working, bathroom door handle lying on a table top, low key room with view onto a car park, no Game drives as it is a Game farm ? Would not recommend not worth the money at all."

    22 May 2017

"We spent one night here on our way down to do the Otter trail. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful game lining the fence on our way in and the warm karoo welcome and food. The owners made such a special effort to settle us in and we had a great time. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Disappointing"

    17 January 2017

"Before reading the review below, please keep in mind that we were travelling with a 8 month old baby. <br/><br/>We stayed here for one night in January 2017, and what a complete disappointment. <br/><br/>On our arrival at Quaggasfontein Private Game Reserve, we were unsure as to where the reception was as there is no clear indication (at least to my eye) of where to go once you arrive. This creates unnecessary confusion and frustration, especially after travelling for many hours prior to our arrival.<br/><br/>Once we checked in, we were informed that our rooms were not located on the main premises, but rather a few kilometers away. We were also informed that if we wished to make use of the Private Game Reserve swimming pool (as it was n searing 38 degrees Celsius that day), that we had to travel back to the main premises as this is where the pool is located. Non of the above was mentioned to us when we made our booking or prior to our arrival, which is unacceptable. Further to the above, having to travel even further after an already long day of traveling is of great inconvenience, as well as the fact that we had to travel back to the main premises should we have wanted to use the swimming pool (which we would have used had in not include more travelling, yet again). <br/><br/>The room itself, although clean, is extremely hot and has no aircon, but rather a roof mounted fan (which is useless and makes no difference whatsoever). It was actually hotter inside our room than outside.<br/><br/>We had lunch at the restaurant which has a very limited set menu, as it basically included a toasted ham, cheese and tomato as the only choice for lunch. To add to the above lack of choice, the toasted sandwich was very dull and bland, all for a quite steep R25. We decided to rather drive back to Colesberg the evening to go have dinner. <br/><br/>Overall, our stay at Quaggasfontein Private Game Reserve was a rather huge disappointment, especially considering the price of R1 000 per night, which doesn't even include breakfast. We shall rather book elsewhere when traveling to Colesberg in the future."

  • "Absolutely brilliant"

    12 January 2017

"What a stunning place. With Buffalo's, Wildebeest, Springbok and Eland in abundance. Watching them within an arms length from the boma, whilst enjoying a cold one. Not to mention the food, a wholesome and delicious meal.<br/>The service is impeccable, and the accommodation so relaxing.<br/>Definitely the place to stop over and unwind.<br/>"

  • "Peaceful, comfortable overnight stay"

    08 January 2017

"A lovely place to stay - clean, well equipped, welcoming. The wildlife was fascinating and came so close to feed and drink.<br/>It is quite far off the road - many km on a gravel road - be warned. But it was worth the trip!"

  • "Great stopover"

    08 January 2017

"An oasis break on our drive from the coast to the highveld. A perfect stopover for a 2 year old who got to run around in a safe environment. Pool was welcoming and refreshing. Comfortable accommodation and perfect rest stop. It was worth the extra little but if dirt road. Will definitely stopover again on a coastal trip."

  • "Kaap vakansie"

    17 July 2016

  • "Quagga again"

    26 March 2016

"We were welcomed late at night to a very friendly host who greeted us with a cold beer and warm food, then a clean room and what a spot. Yes long gravel road, but all worth it. Bearing in Mind this is a farm house and not hotel - Me and my son absolutely loved the home feeling and food from the farm. I am sure to visit there again and Again"

  • "Peaceful place to stay"

"A interesting stop about 30 kms from Colesberg in a lovely setting.<div>Staff were friendly, dinner was served on the stoep under the watchful eye of a couple of buffalo. Made a restful break from the N1.</div><div>We stayed in the hunting lodge in a small simple but adequate room. The main lodge which was the original farmhouse is beautiful, historic and a green oasis.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>"

  • "Worst Ever"

    03 May 2015

"<p>The property is 25 000 acres with a space of 25 meters to roam, blocked in, itfelt like a prison. Not the place to go. We were suppose to go feed the buffalo at 4pm which never happened. </p><p>Lights keep tripping, and no water to Shower. When there was water the spray was no better than the lights extreme spray and then nothing.</p><p>We opted to leave early to brush our teeth at the Engen Garage and get breakfast.</p><p></p>"

  • "Good"

    06 March 2015

"if you ever stay over in colesburgh this is definitely the place to do it. The accommodation is fantastic and located in beautiful grounds and it's well worth going on a drive on the game reserve, we went at feeding time where you get very up close to buffalo, etc.<div>Jessie the owner could not do enough for us and made it that bit more special as we didn't have to do anything except turn the meet occasionally on the braai. You should definitely try the boerewors they make on the farm as it's the best I've tasted in SA so far.</div>"

  • "One night in January"

    14 January 2015

"This is a lovely location and the hosts were warm and welcoming. After a long hot journey to get there, soap in the bathrooms would have been useful. The food was average and we were charged for breakfast even though we had no choice in what we wanted to eat. Dietary requirements and allergies were not taken into consideration. There was not a single dustbin in the entire room. The biggest issue for me was the lack of air conditioning in this extremely hot climate. I do not require a television, but air conditioning is vital. The fan provided was completely inadequate. If these few issues were sorted out I would not hesitate to return and to recommend Quaggasfontein to friends."

  • "A little hideout of peace tranquility and beauty"

    20 September 2014

"What an amazing little treasure trove of wholesome farm life and the amazing Karoo beauty. A host par excellence who was amazing; - in hosting; in communication; in assisting and in catering. Nothing like enjoying traditional boere hospitality in all its glory. The only thing i struggled with is that they fed you too much! And don't miss out on the pumpkin fritters, they're to die for!"

    11 May 2014

"My wife and I stayed overnight at Quaggasfontein on 27 April 2014.It was a wonderful experience. We already felt welcome upon receiving a number of phone calls while we were still travelling from Cape Town - to enquire whether we will have supper the evening and to give us clear directions. The reception by Jessie was warm and friendly and the accommodation excellent. Breakfast the following morning was superb.Adding the stunning natural beauty to the above lead to an extraordinary and wonderful experience."

  • "Good service, but too hot"

    08 January 2014

"The Lodge is very nice and everyone is very accommodating. Food is also very nice and tasty. The only problem is that it gets very hot in the night and there is only ceiling fans in the lodge's rooms and this does not help to keep the room cool. I did not sleep very well due to this."

The Karoo has never been so beautiful as here, surroundings were a lush green and we were instantly refreshed by the scenery and a lovely shower and an ice-cold drink. 14 January 2013

"Wonderful warm reception from the owner and family, Jessie and her team go out of their way to make you feel welcome, it's a wonderful stopover which makes you feel part of the family. However it is 30km drive off the N1 if in a hurry not advisable."

  • "Great experience"

    19 January 2012

"If I had to describe the experience it would be, in on word, fantastic! The hospitality by the owners and staff set the tune for what have just become a great stay over. We were pleasantly surprised with the high quality of the rooms and the spectular view overlooking the Karoo (and a waterhole less than 50 m away). The wining and dining experience was also outstanding and pricing was reasonable. The highlight for us was the herd of buffalo we saw, as well as a visit to the waterhole by a white rhino. An awesome experience and will definitely use you again! PS. Thank you for the tip to avoid the roadworks to Bloem! That is worth gold."

    "The food was delicious!"

  • "Great venue"

    06 January 2012
