On the farm Middelfontein is the new edition to the Kambro Kind guest houses. Saffraan is the best-kept secret and jewel in our accommodation crown. Lanterns and oil lamps enhance the beauty of the fireplace, while the modern bathroom with shower has a gas geyser. This hidden and exclusive love nest will take your breath away. There is no electricity. There is a gas geyser, gas hob, and gas fridge.
"Saffraan is an exceptional experience. Everything was just right. This was my second visit to Saffraan and I will come again!"
"It was a wonderful experience. I know I insisted to stay in Saffraan due to the candles and oil lamps which I realy enjoyed. However, I feel that you could have reduced the rate for the 3rd guest as it was just a mattress on the ground."
"We were eagerly welcomed by our host Juanita. Saffraan is built on a family farm and about 3km from Sutherland town. The little stone cottage is fully furnished with an indoor fireplace and no electricity. It gives you a true South African farm experience. The cottage was neat and tidy upon arrival. The views from the cottages are truly magnificent. There's various hiking trails on the farm. Will definitely recommend to friends and family!"
"On paper the idea sounds good, to stay in Sutherland in a place that is 'green', that doesn't have electricity at all. But in reality you can't stay there for more than one night, especially in winter. It is a small place made of stone, the floor is also stone and there are no carpets to warm the place. There are only two springbok skins next to the bed.

The bed has a thin uncomfortable mattress that has a mattress protector made of plastic and everytime you move, you hear and feel it underneath you which I hated. The bed had a thin duvet but they did have lots of blankets but I would have expected a duvet that is nice and thick that keeps the heat in because I don't like a lot of heavy blankets on top of me when I'm sleeping.

The shower head is old and I literally had to move around in the shower to get some water so the shower was not pleasant at all. And the warm water at the basin was a little treacle and does not stay warm.

You can have a heater but at an additional cost of R100 a day, I find the accomodation quite expensive already and then you can't even get a heater at no additional cost in winter.

You eat breakfast at the main guest house in town, it is included in the price but I don't think it's value for money.

Establishment Response:

You stayed with us for 4 days. A couple of days prior to arrival, you said that she forgot that her 3 year old will be coming along.
They brought her own camping cot along so we gave her a special rate.

Every morning at breakfast I warmly greeted them and asked how they were. They were always happy and pleasant and assured us they were having a nice stay. Even at check-out, I asked if everything was alright and they said that they accidentally broke our cupboard. But other than that everything was fine.
The cupboard door is in pieces and it will take my husband a while to fix it. We had apologised to our next day guests as there wasnt sufficient time to fix between check-ins.

The review was quite an unpleasant surprise? Most of the things she was not happy about could have been addressed after the first morning or we could have offered her a different cottage with electricity.

I get the feeling they are not regular travellers. I feel the review is unfair as we have got such warm feedback from our other Saffraan guests.

Best wishes,"
"First of all... The hospitality is overwhelming! Such nice people...
The cutest secluded stone cottage!
Nice walks with interesting poetry boards as you go along.
At night you are watm and toastie, making an open fire in the cottage.
If you need a beeak from city-life... This is it!
An experience of note!"
"We stayed at Fonteintjie as Saffraan was already booked out. Such a treat to be cared for by our host Juanita. The cottage has all the necessities and cozy winter gear (electric blankets, wall heaters, indoor fire place). Breakfast was great each morning with wonderful home comforts. Definitely our 1st choice when we visit Sutherland again. 4 Stars for Fontentjie!! Jason and Jamie-Lee"
"The Saffraan cottage certainly lives up to its image of being a romantic hide-away under the amazing Sutherland sky. Our host Juanita was exceptionally nice and knowledgable about the area. The cottage is a VERY basic single room, without a kitchen basin. Cooking meals proved to be challenging. Polyester bed linen, single ply toilet paper, and a tricky gas shower made the stay feel on the 'cheap' side. We loved the whole experience but would search for something a bit more luxurious should we visit Sutherland again."
"If you looking for peace and quite, this is the place!!! We felt we were the only 2 people for miles and miles! The stone cottage is quaint ,cosy and very clean....our braai under the Saffraan trees was very special, we will definitely be back. Sutherland has so much to offer and the Stargazing is unbelievable, we learnt so much from Jurg... a big thank you to everyone."
"Peaceful, and just what we needed to be far away from the maddening crowd! Accommodation clean and neat and very private, definitely recommended for the nature lover with plenty of trails to walk/run on. Take your bird book, shrub book, tree book, stargazing book along as there are plenty to keep you busy whilst you enjoy the peace and quiet! The owner very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Will definitely return again!"
"Very good, will be going back."
"We felt miles and miles away from the world, beautiful stream 1 minutes walk from the little cottage.Cozy fireplace saved us from the winter cold, was below 0 degrees Celsius.Time has no meaning here."
