Malala Lodge

Malala is a bush lodge on a 140 hectare private nature reserve, accommodating a maximum of 18 guests, thereby ensuring a tranquil African bush atmosphere and experience.

Our lodge is located in the Hluhluwe area, in the centre of the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are ideally positioned between the world-renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Mkhuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Malala has been owned and managed by the Harvey family since 2001 and we, together with an enthusiastic team of staff, are always on hand to provide the personal attention one would associate with a small intimate lodge.

Our property has a variety of vegetation types, including lowland forest, woodland, grasslands and wetlands. In addition, Malala Lodge is at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal with over 500 species of bird having been recorded in the Elephant Coast area. The Malala Lodge birdlist currently has over 270 recorded species.

The main thatched lodge is centrally positioned within the camp and overlooks indigenous forest. Here guests can enjoy a relaxing drink in the cosy bush pub or take a dip in the palm-fringed swimming pool.

Meals are available, by prior arrangement, in the lodge dining room. Dinner is a home-styled three-course set menu with cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee; and breakfast is a full English breakfast including cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt and tea/coffee. Lunch is not available at the lodge, but lunch options are available in the towns of Hluhluwe and St Lucia.

Adjoining the dining room is a small reading lounge where a variety of magazines and books are available for your interest.

Malala Lodge can accommodate guests on a self-catering basis or, if you would prefer, indulge yourself in genuine home-cooked meals in the attractive thatched dining room.

  • "It's a awesome place"

"The only problem is the lights cant sit and read and no plugs neer the table for charging phones. The rest was 100% value for your money"

  • "None."

    02 May 2018

"Thank you for your email. To be honest, we did not enjoy our stay at Malala Lodge. The facilities were outdated, the bed and pillows were not comfortable, the oven was dirty and filled the place with smoke when we used it and the toaster kept tripping the switches when we tried to use it and the crockery and cutlery were dirty. We actually left a day earlier because of the above reasons. Someone should be checking the facilities to ensure that everything is in working order for the next guest(s)."

  • "A nice lodge,"

    13 May 2008

"-very private, and in wonderful surroundings. The meals were very good; buffet-style dinner and breakfast in a nice area, also including a reference library with interesting books about the country and its animals. The driveway to the lodges is worn down, so the bottom of our passenger car touched the middle of the road. At night you can see the the most beautiful sky, filled with stars! The house wasn't the cleanest; our shower drain was blocked, a lot of cobwebs on the ceiling of the thatched roof, and mice droppings around the fridge. Apart from that the house was reasonably clean. ***Response from establishment - The drain was subsequently cleared and sorted out in 15 minutes by myself. We are a bush lodge with high-pitched thatched roofs which spiders love to build webs in. Our staff are under instruction to regularly clear the webs but the spiders can literally re-build them in 6 hours. What he is actually referring to is gecko droppings (there are no mice in our units). Similar to the spiders, our units do get geckos in them and they are attracted to the warmth of the fridge. Again, our staff daily remove any droppings left behind, but before the unit is cleaned the following day there are bound to be a few more. "

  • "Welcome home to Malala"

    19 August 2006

"A stay at Malala is more like visiting friends than a tourist establishment. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed, and the family really do go out of their way to help and advise guests with absolutely anything (my toe was broken but is much better thanks). On our first evening we were greeted not only by Lesley but by a troop of mongeese foraging at the back of our chalet.Unforgettable.You really feel you are staying in the bush (with home comforts) and the stars in the night sky are simply spectacular. We took the 'Safari Special' option and had a very informative, amusing (courtesy of our host) and entertaining tour of Hluhluwe Reserve.Being surrounded by a herd of elephants in the first five minutes, on the alert for signs of restlessness, is an experience none of us were prepared for!The reserve has a much more 'native' feel than the bigger, more commercialised park we visited further north, and we actually saw more game. You simply have to go whale watching if you are there in season.Words can't describe how awe inspiring it is to see these animals close at hand. It's expensive, but go, it is a once in a lifetime experience. The Zulu village down the road was informative and the dancing very energetic and entertaining.Even our teenage daughters were impressed.Do try the Zulu beer - it was actually quite good! Our only disappointments were:not staying longer and the tour of the wetlands was a bit dull (once you've seen one hippo you've seen 'em all). The food is very good and plentiful, I can't fault the 'home style' cooking, but something a wee bit more adventurous or a choice of starters/deserts would appeal to a more international clientele.Saying that, I never heard any complaints in the dining room.I would definitely recommend Malala and go back again, maybe when it is sunnier and we can use that fantastic pool. Thanks to everyone, and I wish you every success. "

  • "Really enjoyed the tranquility"

    02 August 2006

"We really enjoyed the tranquility of the bush, and the lodge is not to far from other places we wished to visit. It is the ideal place from which to visit the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.A light at the outside braai would be an improvement.Thank you very much for your hospitality and the very friendly manner in which we were welcomed. "

  • "A good place to stay"

    25 July 2006

"We enjoyed the perfectly equipped chalets, the atmosphere at the bar and in the dining room, walks around the lodge, a great game drive and the short distances to many things to see in the region and last but not least the hospitality of the owners. But after three dinners with rice and potatoes in the same style we would have appreciated a more inspired kitchen."
