"Very happy with our stay here. It looks exactly like the photos and lots of small thoughtful touches to make you feel extra welcome. Not too far from town or nearby activities."

  • "AaFrika Amazing View an Amazing Place"

    18 February 2018

"The cottage is situated in a very quiet and peaceful area called Hoekwil so would not suit someone wanting a lively place to stay. However the views are stunning and the cottage well equipped and the owner's Robyn and Robin are very friendly and helpful. It's nice to watch the horses, dogs and chickens in their beautiful garden. There is a local store 15 minutes walk from the cottage where you can buy most of what you need. The town of Wilderness is a 10 minute drive where there is a small super market and a few restaurants and bars. On Fridays there is a local market which is nice to visit. The main town of George is 20 minutes drive and there you will find a lot more choice for shopping, eating and drinking. If you want to go a little further afield there are some wonderful beaches within easy reach. Cape Town is approximately a five hour drive and Port Elizabeth three hours and both are well worth a visit. In Cape Town you have the waterfront which is bustling, and then there is Table Mountain and close by the wine region of Stellenbosch. In Port Elizabeth you have Addo Elephant National Park. You will not only see Elephants but also Lions, Monkeys, Spotted Hyenas Antelope which include Kudu, Red Hartebeest and Eland and a variety of other animals and birds. A place not to miss."

  • "Sadly Un(pet)friendly"

"My husband and I travel a lot around the country with our dogs and decided to try out different accommodation this time we were in the Wilderness area. On arrival we were a little worried by the standoffish nature of the owner and were left feeling that the dogs were not very welcome there. Everywhere else we have been the dogs have been loved up and names asked, etc, not here... We were repeatedly told to keep the gates locked so the dogs wouldn't roam (there wasn't a latch on the gate which was a bit odd if this was so important as to repeat 3 times) Anyway we were there to enjoy the long weekend so didn't let it bother us.The cottage is nice and clean, if a bit chilly. There are no doors between the bedroom and bathroom, so keep that in mind if you are not comfortable with things like that :) The braai area is nice and the view was pretty, but where in Wilderness/Hoekwil is it not... There is a really big garden space for the cottage, nice for dogs and kids. Between this and the main house there is a little fence. So it does cause a bit of barking from the resident dogs protecting their territory and nervousness from the owners. Most places let the dogs interact without fences so ours were a bit put out at not being able to greet and maybe play, but as they are really well trained Border Collies they leave other dogs alone when told to. When we left the owner again seemed really nervous of letting her dogs near the fence. Nervous owners make for nervous and sometimes vicious dogs, so this made us decide definitely not to go back there. Also makes me think this should not be a pet-friendly establishment. So this is as far as I got with this review until I received a sms from the owner accusing our dogs of damaging her carpet and us not saying anything. Being really kind and honest people we were really taken aback by this. When we arrived in the cottage I had noticed a stain on the bedroom mat and had commented to my husband did he think it was our dogs, which would be really weird behaviour for them. So we checked it and it was dry and didn't smell. I did not mention it to the owner as it was a pre-existing stain and never in my wildest dreams thought we would be accused of the damage. Most pet-friendly places have stains, etc here and there, it doesn't bother us. So between this and the nervousness around dogs I would highly recommend that this place not allow pets.... There are a lot of other nice places in the area that love to have visiting doggies. It is also slightly more expensive than other places we've been."
