The Montagu Country Hotel, situated in South Africas dried fruit capital and center of the famous Route 62, is the only original Art Deco hotel in the country that has been welcoming visitors through her iconic stained-glass doors since 1875.
The hotel has 29 individually furnished en-suite bedrooms, 13 luxury rooms and 14 classic rooms. Two self-catering units (one unit of which is wheelchair-accessible) are ideal for families or business travellers who would like to make Montagu their home away from home for a couple of days.
The south-facing deck area of Feathers & Flatcaps Coffeeshop and Cocktail Lounge welcomes the morning sun. It also spoils guests with magnificent views over the Langeberg Mountains, while watching the Klein-Karoo sunset after a day of exploring the area. Light lunches and scrumptious platters can be enjoyed on the deck whilst sipping some of the regions finest wines, cocktails and mocktails or speciality Bootlegger coffees.
Charlestons Restaurant serves breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is served in our spacious Breakfast Room and glass enclosed Garden Patio overlooking the lush green gardens that the Montagu Country Hotel is renowned for. Dinner is a somewhat more formal affair. Chef Werner Blom enjoys the challenge of fusing traditional South African cuisine with fine dining flair and presentation. Dine by romantic candle light in a classical setting reminiscent of days gone by. Is this the 21st century? NO, we are back in the days when serving was still an art.
Why not settle in for an evening of reading, or catch up with friends before or after dinner in the Lubbe Lounge. The lounge is dedicated to the memory of the late Gert Lubbe who played an integral part in the establishment of Route 62 and is well known in the South African tourism industry. Gert was also the owner of the Hotel and mentor to current hosts P-J and Colene Basson.
Lush gardens surround the hotel and provide a tranquil getaway from the everyday hustle and bustle, whilst two swimming pools bring much relief on hot summer days. The on-site Wellness Spa specialises in health and beauty treatments and boasts a mineral Jacuzzi bath and sauna. Various couples treatments are offered.
A welcome new addition to the property is the activity hub, which is home to three of Montagus most popular activity operators Cape Dry, Flying Feet and Protea Farm Tractor Trips. Guests are able to book their daily excursions and activities, or gather further information about the area from the Montagu-Ashton Tourism Office without having to leave the hotel.
Explore the Robertson wine route in a chauffeur-driven American Dream Car. Two Classic Cadillacs from the 50s and 60s make up the current fleet of this fun activity based at the Montagu Country Hotel.
A new dedicated conference, banqueting and team building venue has been established. These new facilities, together with the regions exciting outdoor activities, its close proximity to Cape Town and our Klein-Karoo hospitality, makes it the perfect location for your next function/event or special celebration.
"Montagu has a few must-do and must-go destinations, and the Country Hotel is one them. I often went to the restaurant and eventually booked for one night. It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. Will definitely come back!"
"Stunning place to stay. All staff friendly. Winston is a gem. The food could be improved but overall a stunning place"
"Spa centar and massages are not good at allPeople doing service are kind but you want a good masage to come back.Other people on the reception waiters and room kipers are very friendly and doing a good job All in all good stay"
"I loved my stay at the hotel staff were very attentive, I left wanting to come back ASAP but unfortunately a hick-up at the end of my stay wont see me there again. On arrival I was shown where to park on the hotel grounds and upon leaving in fact only when I got to Barrydale did I notice a gum like substance all over the left hand side of my land rover from top to bottom I can only assume it was from the trees above the car. I immediately called the hotel and explained the situation where I was told that someone from management would call me, I am still waiting 4 days later, I will need to hopefully get the land rover washed and polished to get this gum like substance off the it."
"Really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and friendly and helpful staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Our rooms were clean tidy and functional. Could upgrade the beds though, not very comfortable; our bed was small for two adults. In spite of this we would go again. The dinning experience was very good - the Karroo lamb chops and the Karroo Lamb pie were excellent. Breakfast was also good. The swimming pools were refreshing - temperatures were in the upper thirties during our stay."
"We, a group of 3 have just had a stopover at the MCH (18/0/15) & must say that the comfort level is beyond reproach. The position of the hotel is ideal for wandering around the main shopping street in town<div>In this day & age to have such a spacious residence with lovely gardens to go with it plus food that is simply divine was such a treat. To even have live soothing piano music played in the background at the evening meal was an absolute bonus. The Art Deco style furniture is a unique twist to any traveller to see, appreciate and to spend time with. To have such a volume of this furniture is most unusual & adds such a historic twist to the whole adventure<div>The breakfasts are delicious & very satisfying. We were very lucky also to have seen the Wisteria in full bloom along with other garden plants & the wild birdlife was fantastic. To see a Pin Tiailed Whydah performing such acrobatic flight was amazing. The variety of other birds was something also totally unexpected</div><div><br /></div><div>I give full marks to the staff for their attentiveness & to the owner who kept us enthralled with his assistance in playing "Fly me to the Moon" on his cellphone & for taking lovely pictures of us below the Wisteria trellis</div><div><br /></div><div>Well done MCH for the opportunity to spend an evening with you. We will recommend you to all who wish to stay a few nights in Montagu</div><div><br /></div><div>Cheers</div><div><br /></div><div>D A RAMSAY</div></div>"
"Overall an excellent hotel, ideally situated, great spa treatments and gardens superb"
"Very homely and peaceful atmosphere. Enjoyed the farmstyle cooked foods. The antique furniture just takes you back in time, to when the world was at a much slower pace."
