Sterboom Guest House

Sterboom Guest House is a self-catering house, situated close to the town of Sutherland. It's also one of the coldest towns in the country with frequent snow falls during winter. Sterboom Guest House is named after the unique endangered veld plant which is called Star Cliffortia/Cliffortia Arborea. It is confined to the mountains around Sutherland on a southern peak, high up in the mountains.

The house consists of a fully equipped open-plan kitchen living area/ that is gas operated, and an indoor braai and fireplace with firewood on request. The two spacious rooms can sleep up to four guests. On offer is the opportunity to experience a working Karoo farm, hiking trails, some game roaming around and spectacular sunsets, all with warm Karoo hospitality. Only 1 bathroom.

The house offers Wi-Fi and solar power. TV with easy view channels. There is only MTN signal close by. Please bring your own towels.

Sutherland is also close to the sites of unique corbel houses. Corbel houses are only found in this region in and around the towns of Fraserburg, Williston and Carnarvon. They almost look like stone beehives and were built from flat stones common to the area where wood was not available.

Mention the town of Sutherland and most people will know that this is the place where people go to look at the skies. It's where one can marvel at the star scopes that sweep the outer limits and where astronomers come to use the telescopes of the South African Astronomical Observatory.

"Having mod cons in the middle of a Karoo sheep farm is great. Pity about the corrugated 15km of dirt road to get there."

"We went with the hope of snow and we woke in a wonderland of white! Facility much more spacious and comfortable than the photo's. The planned second fireplace will be a comforting addition especially in winter. Having traveled many a back road we can highly recommend."

  • "Lekker plek"

    04 August 2012

"Het lekker gebly in Sterboom. Vriendelike ontvangs. Lekker stil en kon afsluit van die buitewereld. Netjiese huisie, skoon en het die nodige byderhand. Sal net aanbeveel dat daar n kers of 2 byderhand is as daar dalk nie son is om die son paneel te herlaai as dit dalk bevolk is nie."
