The Artists Cottage

The Artist's Cottageis situated in the centre of the little town called Sutherland. The cottage is a typical Karoo-style building, but it has been renovated with modern flare without losing its authentic feel.

Sutherland is situated in the Northern Cape, just a stone's throw from the Western Cape's border, and is known for its clear skies, stars and its cold temperatures in winters, which can drop to below zero and snows occasionally. The town is also steeped in South African history, endemic succulents and amazing architecture.

Sutherland is home to SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, which is thesecond largest optical telescope in the world. The town itself is quaint and quiet, but there is more to it than just visiting the observatory. The Artist's Cottage is ideal for that weekend away from the city, and spending some quality time with family.

The house contains two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, and comfortably sleeps four.Downstairs has a bedroom with a double bed and en-suite bathroom. An open-plan dining area, kitchen and big fireplace, built in the old-fashioned way and is big enough to climb into and sit next to the fire, is available. The kitchen has a fridge, a small gas stove, a microwave, and all cutlery and crockery that you may need. Upstairs is a loft bedroom, which is accessible via stairs inside the house or outside of the house. The room has a modern open-plan bathroom with a loose standing Victorian bath, a separate toilet and enough space to sit and read.

"We arrived In Sutherland on 20 Feb 18at( about 13h40) only to discover that 13 Jubilee Street is NOT,(as stated on the booking confirmation) the correct address. We phoned the 2 contact numbers provided on the booking confirmation to be told by these contacts that they are no longer associated with Artists Cottage as it has been sold. On phoning Safarinow we were put in contact with the hostess L S Loader who claimed that she did tried to contact us to arrange ETA, BUT as we were in TANKWA Karoo Nat Park - we had no reception. We questioned that fact the house was not named for indentification (a note of any kind with a contact number on the door would have helped) & were also concerned about the steep stairs going to the loft that makes it very difficult for pensioners to carry luggage up the loft room. We were told that as an alternative to use the outside stairs BUT there are no outside lights at either the front & back door or the stairs. Difficult to use at night coming back from star gazing. Also, at the top of the inside stairs, are an opening that is unsafe to anyone travelling with young children. The stairs are fixed with steel wires attached to the loft, although it felt safe, made a very unsafe impression. We asked for extra outside chairs and a fan .... and these were dropped outside on the pavement while the door was open and we were inside. We decided to stay only one night due to unforeseen circumstances, and this was accepted by the hostess and we arranged for her to collect the key at 10am. We, however, were ready earlier andsent her a sms to advise her that we left the key inside (because we did not want to be a nuisance)and closed the door. We were having coffee at the restaurant 50m down the road where we could watch the house. The sms reply received stated: That I was a challenge and that I should work on my communication skills, and well as being very rude, and that I was reported as such to Safarinow I take exception to this and invite Safarinow to contact any of the other bookings that we made on this road trip to check my communication skills/attitude.The house however, was well equipped and beautifully furnished. I would not return to it though."

  • "Wonderful atmosphere!"

    20 October 2017

"The house has been beautifully restored, but not over the top and feel as if we had been taken back in time. Not close to main road so nice and quiet. We had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable!"

"We had such an amazing stay at the Artist Cottage this weekend. The house is beautiful. Its a pity we didn't have snow but that is the only thing that did not go as planned. The hourly tour at SALT was amazing and very informative and we did the stargazing with Jurg ar Sterland... Definitely worth every cent.. All and all absolutely AMAZING experience and stay. Will definitely recommend it. Thank you Annelien"

    26 September 2013

"What a lovely time we had in Sutherland. The accommodation was really really lovely. We will definitely be going back again. Thanks to Annelien for organizing wood for us and a personal touch of brownies on arrival! The only fault would be that a new lounge suite is needed. We had a wonderful time there - so peaceful and relaxing - THANK YOU Annelien."

"Quaint cottage however the furniture is all old and the couch's especially are dirty and are falling to pieces, the one can hardly be sat on. Considering the cold temperatures in Sutherland, I feel that one should at least be able to heat the cottage properly but with the huge gaps and holes in the doors this is impossible. It would have been nice to arrive at a warm cottage and I am sure that it would not have taken much trouble and effort for this to be done. The 2 plate gas stove is not really enough. The cottage was however clean.I do think that considering the above the price is expensive."

  • "We were robbed"

    06 July 2013

"Our holiday was unfortunately cut short, when barely 8 hours after arriving in this sleepy dorp, the cottage was broken into while we were out having supper. The third break-in in 4 days, it appears that we were watched, as they new exactly where to find things. The cottage itself, while beautiful and well equipped (impressively, with the original Trivial Pursuit), is not very secure with no outside or street lighting. It is also not marked as a guest house, which initially surprised me. It has, however, got the BEST bath."

  • "Best place"

    07 May 2013

"Absolutely gorgeous little place! Loved the décor and vibe. Only suggestion is that the bath be a touch more private, though the shower is just perfect! I believe this is the best place in Sutherland."

  • "Good stop over"

    29 December 2012

"Good resting place, all that is needed in room. Very spacious."

  • "Comfortable overnight stay"

    11 January 2012

"Comfortable enough and well equipped. Ideal for overnight stop to see SALT. Bathroom window downstairs needs urgent repair, because the water on the shower floor leaves a bad smell with no ventilation."

  • "Romantic"

    02 January 2012

"This little cottage must be the most romantic place I have stayed in. The cottage is well appointed and has everything that one requires. Also must mention that it was impeccably clean and neat. Just a pity that we didn't spend more time there."

  • "Interesting"

  • "Absolutely amazing!"

    14 February 2011

"What an incredible place. We were so surprised at the layout and interior of the cottage, completely taken aback. We felt comfortable from the moment we stepped into the cottage. Everything we needed for self-catering were catered for. The town itself is one of the best destinations we have visited. The peace and quiet was perfect for relaxing and letting your hair down. The SALT tour was very interesting and professionally conducted. But most of all, the best self-catering accommodation we've experienced in a long time. Highly recommended! Thank you. Keep it up."

  • "Comfortable stay"

    16 June 2010

"During our 3 night stay, we were very comfortable. The beds were warm and cozy with electric blankets and feather duvets. The cottage even has underfloor heating, which is much appreciated due to its concrete floors. The kitchen was well equipped with a gas two plate stove and microwave, although there is no oven. The fireplace was great, big enough to braai or make a potjie on, as well as keep us warm.Fortunately we took an extension lead with us which made it possible to put a laptop on the coffee table near the fire, as the plug was on the opposite side of the room. The bathroom upstairs is very open-plan (i.e. no privacy), so it would be nice to have a screen to put up around the bath.Overall we enjoyed our time in the cottage."

    10 January 2010

"We stayed in the cottage for one night: 8th January 2010. Joelene du Plessis was very helpful and concerned for our comfort. We appreciated her interest in ensuring that our stay was enjoyable. She offered friendly advice on where to eat and gave us an interesting background to the town. Her enthusiasm is visible in her website Discover Sutherland. The cottage itself has a serious problem with windows. We could not open any windows. The result was that it was stuffy and airless. We found that many flies congregated on the windows and upstairs as they could not get out. The lower bathroom smelt musty and damp... not very pleasant when trying to sleep. When we arrived we noticed that the unstairs rubbish bin in the bathroom had not been cleaned and contained personal rubbish from the previous guests."

  • "Wonderful time"

    21 September 2009

"We were four adults and one child, staying in the Artist cottage on the weekend. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the quirky decor and authentic feel of the house. The beds were very comfortable, with electrical blankets and the big fire place is a winner. Would recommend this venue to anybody visiting Sutherland. The cottage is situated close to the main road with all the restaurants and shops. A big thank you to Jolene, for making our stay so much more enjoyable."

  • "Great stay!"

    06 July 2009

"I was looking for a place near Salt which was not a guest house but accomodated 4 adults and 4 children. This was difficult to find and not wanting to travel far to the Observatory I found the "Digtersuis". A bit concerned that it would be to cramped, I am happy to note that it was perfect. The upstairs is very big and more then enough space for 2 x extra blow up mattresses for the kids. There are 2 bathrooms with 2 toilets which otherwise would not have worked. For the cost for the weekend it was absolutely worth it. Our hostess Jolene was very accommodating and helpful and even though it only supposedly accommodates 4 people there is more then enough cutlery and crockery to go around. I will definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a "holiday house" for 2 families with smaller children.(Note there are stairs) Next time will definitely bring bikes. "Digtershuis" also very clean with firewood, electric blankets, lovely clean towels and bedding provided. Thanks for a great weekend!"
