Silwerfontein Farm

Silwerfontein is a beautiful pet-friendly working farm that is declared a Natural Heritage Site, surrounding the Volvlei Dam, with stunning fynbos- and mountain views.

There are four charming cottages available, as well as a Double Decker Bus and two Campsites set in the forest. Since the farm borders on a nature conservancy and the area surrounding the Volvlei Dam, an interesting variety of game and birdlife can be seen.

The cottages are fully equipped and private, with clean bedding provided. Guests must bring their own bath- and swimming towels. Solar energy powers the lights, and additional oil lamps add to the ambience. Wood-burning fireplaces turn the cottages into snug and warm havens in winter. Wake up to the sound of nature; with no TVs, radios or hairdryers to disturb the peace.

A range of hiking- and biking trails are available, with more exiting routes in the process of being developed. We also have our own herd of wild ponies happily roaming the farm.

  • "Views over the dam, stunning sunsets and the mountain directly behind the property"

"Property has stunning views and the host was superb. The property could do with a little tlc and a couple Rands spent on it."

"Loved the silence and simplicity of everything. Karin is a very kind and helpful person. We had some issues with heat and gas but mainly due to the bad weather. Definitely visit again."

"Awesome 2 days at Silwerfontein. 1st night in the double-decker bus, then hiked up and stayed the 2nd night in the cave. Thanks to Karin who went out of her way to accommodate us!"

  • "Terrible, overpriced."

    25 September 2017

"There are cheap backpacker place better than this. Badly equipped and appointed. The solar electricity does not even power a hair dryer and no hot water in the morning. The host had to go and fetch towels as there was none. Stay away."

"<p>Unfortunately we did not have a great stay and cut short our visit. The access road is in a terrible condition with lots of mud and we were concerned that we would get stuck as we do not have a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle. There was no wood available at all.(in the middle of June)An alarm started going off at 2am and we had no idea what it was or how to switch it off (figured out later that it had something to do with the solar panel). </p><p>We packed up the following morning and did not return for our second night and found alternate accommodation in Tulbagh. </p><p>The cottages need a bit of sprucing up as well. </p><p>On a positive note, we were warm but only because we used all the spare duvets from the single beds. The setting is lovely with views over the vlei and it is very peaceful. However, we will not be back. </p>"

  • "Over priced, Under delivered"

"<p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">We wanted a weekend and peace and quiet, which is exactly what we got. The location is away from any day to day activity and you can truly relax. The venue allows pets, which was the primary reason we decided to book with them. You get sufficient free firewood and our cottage has a large bath tub with more than enough hot water. And that is where the positives stops.........</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">Firstly the price : we requested a last minute quote for a long weekend in September. Surprised that they still had space we desperately accepted and paid, not reviewing the pricing properly (our own fault). When I wanted to do this review I happened to note the price on SafariNow is quotes at R240 pnpp, a difference of R60 to what we paid. We queried this with SafariNow, who responded that the prices quoted on the website are "from" and that the owner can charge what she wants. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">The R600 per night we paid is overpriced for what you get and to say that we expected more, is an understatement. The cottage is basically an old out building, sub-divided, filled with odd furniture and marketed as rustic. The quality of the furniture, finishing and decor are not what you would expect for the price. Even at R480 per night, the cottage would have been just acceptable, but definitely not something I would suggest to my friends.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">In summary, a nice enough location, but the cottages are not what the label says and definitely overpriced.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: times new roman; font-size: 16px;"></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">Other minor points:</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">The cottages are marketed as "private", which we took separate, secluded cottages, while actually there are 3 cottages in the one building, about 50 meters from the main farm building. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">There is a beautiful pool, but guests are not allowed to use it.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">The dirt road to the farm will require a car with decent ground clearance as it is fairly bad in places and the directions from the main road was difficult to follow.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 8.5pt;">The wind blew on the Saturday night, and I mean it BLEW. You could simply not go outside. Apparently this is a frequent occurrence for the location. They are pet friendly, so we took our dogs with and we all took a walk through the forrest, only to return covered in ticks. BUT that is nature and cannot be kept against the venue or owner. </span></p><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">&nbsp;</p>"
